On Thursday’s Deadline: White House, MSNBC’s chief political analyst Nicolle Wallace suggested Fox News now qualifies as “state-run media” because it isn’t critical of President Trump.
Wallace said the American people “are hungry” for a free press. One panelist, MSNBC contributor Elise Jordan, added, “Well, and they want to know what’s actually happened.”
Jordan went on to suggest that the ratings at Fox News have dropped “because they don’t immediately report breaking news that’s not flattering to the president.” She then brought up that she has lived in other countries that had corrupt leaders that led their states to ruin.
The lone voice of reason was American Conservative Union’s Matt Schlaap who called out the caterwauling:
“Can I just say one thing? This rhetoric is way over the top. Fox News has different types of shows. There’s plenty of Republicans on Fox News who are never-Trumpers. It’s more diverse than you’re characterizing.”
Wallace interrupted and went on the defensive, saying she didn’t attack Fox News — right before she attacked Fox News:
“Matt, I didn’t attack Fox News. Let me make a point, though, real quick and then I’ll give you all the time you need.“Even folks at Fox News will acknowledge pressure to carry the Trump message. You know that to be true. I know that to be true. People that have left Fox News — how is that different from state-run media in some places?”
Schlaap said to be careful making such a suggestion, especially when other networks are feeling the opposite pressure to oppose Trump at every turn.
Oddly, Wallace said that wasn’t happening at MSNBC, but laughed and asked rhetorically, “Can’t you tell?”
Schlaap had the final word and delivered the most level-headed comment of the day:
“[A]cross the line, we all have to admit in the news media generally, we all have friends in it, they are not by and large Trump supporters and are not by and large Republicans, okay? Mostly, not completely. And there’s no question if you look at polls, the press itself has not done itself a lot of good by always coming across as balanced.“And I think it is unfair — we’ve been here for an hour. We have a free press. You all were able to say everything you want to say. This is not a third-world. You’re not being silenced. This is still America. We’re going to be okay, guys.”
