Much of the optimism for the coming weeks has been due to an acceleration in the deployment of a number of vaccines that should be ushering us toward “herd immunity”: The point at which enough of us are in possession of antibodies that the virus itself runs out of places to go.
But now, just as many states are beginning to reopen, Dr. Anthony Fauci has some bad news.

“That’s why we stopped using herd immunity in the classic sense,” he added. “I’m saying: Forget that for a second. You vaccinate enough people, the infections are going to go down.”
And he’s not the only one worried about the possibility of America never reaching this milestone.
“The virus is unlikely to go away,” said Rustom Antia, an evolutionary biologist at Emory University in Atlanta. “But we want to do all we can to check that it’s likely to become a mild infection.”
Dr. Fauci has long been a controversial figure among vaccine-skeptical Americans, and this latest change in linguistics won’t likely do much for their confidence in the epidemiologist.
