TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

"They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved." - 2 Thessalonians 2:10b

SOMETHING TO PONDER

I had a pastor friend ask a crowd, “How many want a Ferrari?” Most people’s hands went up. Then he said, “How many are willing to do what it takes to get one?” Every hand went down. We all sacrifice for the things we love. To be honest, as a dad, I’ve been surprised by what I’m willing to sacrifice for my kids, for their good in big and small ways.

God gave his only Son for us to have eternal life (John 3:16), and Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before him: humanity reconciled with his Father (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus also shared parables about how the Kingdom is worth anything we can pay (the pearl of great price, the treasure in the field). When we understand the value, we willingly give up everything for it. What greater treasure than God and eternal life?

Paul writes warnings and explanations to the Thessalonian church about the end times, people given over to deception and destruction. In the teaching, he gives the core reason leaders and individuals believe the lies of the Devil—they didn’t love the truth. Loving the truth is different than hearing it or even being familiar with it. When we love the truth, we pay whatever it takes to get it because we know it leads to salvation and life. We will sacrifice to acquire truth.

For too long in Christianity, we’ve been satisfied with knowing about the truth, like repeating the right doctrine is the solution. But even the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19). We must choose to love the truth, prioritize truth, and sacrifice what it takes to get him. I say him because truth is a person, Christ: the way, the truth, the life. Walking with him in the way brings truth and life. But following Jesus costs us something. Always. And yet, what we get in return is more than worth the cost.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
I choose to love the truth, not just know about it. You gave your Son so I could have eternal life, and Jesus endured the cross for the joy of reconciliation. I surrender my life, my desires, and my choices to follow you alone. Teach me to value your Kingdom above everything else, to sacrifice for what really, eternally matters. Help me to pursue truth in Christ, knowing he is worth any cost.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Think of a time you paid a high price for something you really wanted or needed? How easy was it to pay that price?

2. Examine your heart about how you love the truth of God. Do you view it as the most precious resource in all existence?

3. How have you sacrificed things in your life to know truth? What are other ways you do or could show you love the truth, willing to pay any cost?
