PRIDE...will steal your Life away!! - Part 1

PRIDE...will steal your Life away!! - Part 1

PRIDE...will steal your Life away!! - Part 1
By Dontwobears Matthew 6:28-34
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Emphasis is mine)
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (Emphasis is mine) There was a day in my past, when I actually resembled "Tony Orlando"!! Moustache and all!! I must admit, though, it was never my intention to look like him. Considering those of us...today, fewer and fewer will remember who Tony Orlando was and even less who I was...back then. I also remember a time, when us young guys would slick our hair back, making sure we had that Duck Tail just right too. Then we would spend hours in front of the mirror, making sure that we had that Pompedor-Do just right, squinting like James Dean. Of course there came the days when we had the longer hair and it curved across our Foreheads, just like the Fab Four. Ahhh those days from the 50's to the late 70's, weren't we spectacular?! Now........I'm just Old! Some days are better than others, joints hurt some days and then there are days when they don't...now ask me if anyone wants to do the 1 mile run!! I'll admit, I would rather sit down and watch YOU run that mile!! When I was overseas, I just had to be the best at Martial Arts!! We were really going to give it to the VC then!! There is a saying, "Don't show up at a gun-fight, with a knife!" Made perfect sense then as it does now! Only now days, my hands hurt most of the time, as do my knees, but...that's a whole new story all together and not what I have in mind this time around. In my last article, I discussed with you the merits, or lack there of, in dealing with "Pride". That's a horribly insidious SIN, in and of itself, to be truthful and honest. Just as I mentioned before, we are all afflicted with it and horribly so! What did you do...way back when...when you were in your Prime?? Ah..Huh!! Yep...everyone is welcomed here, we are all in the same boat, at one point in time or the other, right?! As we say in Texas, (we have a number of sayings here!) "It's time to Cowboy up!" That means, it's time to show your true colors! "There ain't no such a thing as Special Pews in Church!" Pride can cause a number of problems, mostly because as a SIN it begins within each of us, it can make an adolescent become a Bully. It can make a high schooler sneer down their noses at those less fortunate, those that don't have all the best clothes to wear, or the nicest car to drive. It is a SIN that is learned and then compounded on everyday and if your willing to be truthful with yourself and others, everyone has dealt with it. The reason I brought up the afore-mentioned situations is this, it was odd for me to be like that, in those times...I am an American Indian. Those things really didn't have much to do with me and yet, I was totally involved, right up to my eyeballs. Pride took me places I am not happy with myself in rememberence of. I could have and should have been better about those things and yet, I was just as guilty as all the rest. I look back and cringe to be sure and yet today it is worse than ever before, we live in the "It's all about ME" Society! We like to talk about being Progressive or more Enlightened now days, yet when we take a moment and look around, we have fallen much farther than all the previous generations. Somewhere in my mind, the question keeps rising, "Why do we keep doing all the same things and then expect a different outcome"?? That is the epidemy of Lunacy! We should feel the need to STOP, look around ourselves, regroup and then head in another direction. We should be able to recount the obvious hurdles of the past, realize why they failed back then and the reroot ourselves to grow in other directions that will prove more worthy. But we don't! We doggedly head down the exact same paths, thinking we are smarter than those before us and end up doing the exact same things they did. What's even worse, we have the arrogance to look around with utter shock on our faces! Here's the problem. We look across the great and deep divide, we see that it's much greener over there! So we jump in the car and drive right off the cliff! Duhhhh! How many people must drive over the cliff before someone says, "STOP....Your going to drive off the cliff and die!!!" Of course, we get out of the car and look over the edge of the cliff and then say "Hey...your RIGHT!!" Of course now, your saying "But...I wanna go over there!!" So then someone gets the idea of building a Bridge across the Great Divide and everyone should be happy then....right?! Wrong!! They put up a "Toll Booth"! And now everyone that wants to cross the Bridge must pay a Toll. Come to think of it, that would only be fair, someone built the Bridge, it cost them a lot of money, so now everyone pays a small Toll Fee to use the Bridge. Only now, a lot of people start complaining, that they don't want to have to pay the Toll. They don't understand, it's one way or the other! I don't care how wonderful a person you think you are, you must still pay the toll to use the bridge. Pride will make you lazy and leave you feeling you are worth more than you actually are and there is Scripture about this; Romans 12:1-3 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith." Pride makes you believe you are more worthy than others, in almost every case that you come across, in the end it will leave you all alone. There is a saying "He/Her thought He/She was a legend in His/Her own mind". Sad to say, the young never understand this until they are much older and even then, some will still miss the point. If you don't believe me, take a long, hard, look at those of Hollywood! Since the beginning, they have all thought they were so wonderful, so deserving of the adulation of their Fans. I like to think of that sort of Pride, as the Ultimate Act of Pride. The idea of raising oneself, so highly, above all others...it is shameful in the least! Pride will make you loose track of who you really are, it will blind you to those things of God more worthy than your simple life. They shove the things of God as far away as they can, because they are more concerned with being a God themselves! They commit acts in Public, they know are wrong! They believe they are above the Laws, that should guide all of us. Then one day, sitting in front of a mirror, they see thier own haggered face, how drawn and old they have become, they notice how their star image has lagged, their Fans have fallen away, they feel old, ugly and all alone. And by then, they can't remember how they first began, who they were back then, they have lost themselves all together! As I said before, the young seek this out, not understanding the Life they are so willing to give up and then end up with nothing left of themselves. Some have come to this conclusion at very young ages, they have died from many different things. How sad to see the worthlessness of being Famous! Never once will they think to ask "What does God think of me"? Pride makes you loose your self-respect, as well as any respect you may have for others, relegating them to the new term for you, of them, as the "Little People". So...is there anything you feel is Prideful in you?? Is there someone you hurt because of what-ever idea, or that it made you feel better about yourself, whom have you stepped on lately? Or maybe you feel you deserve something more than others, so you decide to steal it. Hmmm...feeling Prideful now? You deserve something that is not yours, but you want it and feel you deserve it more than another. So as you are stealing this, what-ever-it-may-be, your Pride has driven you to become a Thief as well. Pride will make you think to yourself, that you are too good, to get your hands dirty through work. Pride or the lack there of, as in self-respect, will have you feeling you should stand in line with your hand out, to recieve what you have not worked for. Pride will have you thinking that you should be cared for in every way, by those that are willing to work, when you and I both know, you should feel ashamed. There is Scripture to this effect as well; 2 Thessalonians 3:10-14 "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed." Am I speaking about those that have lost their jobs, for whatever reason? NO!! As long as there was nothing, that person was doing that was wrong, of course. If you are old enough, then retire, if you are still young, find another job and don't worry about the pay, the Lord will provide what ever you lack. As long as you are doing what you KNOW is right and honest, according to the Lord, then you are covered by HIS promises from the Bible, IF you belong to HIM. IF you do NOT belong to HIM, you are on your own...good luck!!

What Does It Mean To Believe?

What Does It Mean To Believe?

What Does It Mean To Believe?
By Grant Phillips "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31 What is so difficult about that verse to understand? It's a very simple verse. Concerning salvation, it is short and to the point, but many have totally misconstrued what it says, especially by complicating the one word, "believe." Apart from those who understand this word, one person may think we believe on Jesus and then go our merry way. It doesn't matter how we live our life as long as we acknowledge we believe in Jesus. It's all about, "Do I believe in Jesus? Yeah, I do, so leave me alone!" Another set of ears may hear this word "believe" and say "We believe, but if we ever stop believing, we're lost again. Our works must be maintained. It's all about our hanging on." Believe it or not, some think, based on how this verse is laid out in the KJV, that if the head of the household believes, then everyone in the household is saved; i.e. "and thy house." What the verse is actually saying though is that if we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ we will be saved, and the same applies to any and everyone else. In other words, if they also believe on the Lord Jesus Christ they will be saved. Finally, some dwell on whether we say, "We believe on Jesus or we believe in Jesus." This reminds me of Matthew 23:24, "Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel." Consider the following verses. "To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." (Emphasis mine) Romans 3:16 "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." (Emphasis mine) Galatians 2:16 "Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus." (Emphasis mine) John 12:11 "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." (Emphasis mine) Acts 16:31 Using the King James translation (KJV) in this instance: Romans 3:26 "ek" is translated "in." Galatians 2:16 "eis" is translated "in." John 12:11 "eis" is translated "on." Acts 16:31 "epi" is translated "on." So isn't it really all about, "What does it mean to believe?" Someone may have James 2:19 on the mind, "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." We aren't talking about "who" believes, but "what" does the word "believe" mean for us to be saved? The Greek word for "believe" is pisteuo. According to Strongs (G4100) it means: (I) to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in; (A) of the thing believed, to credit, have confidence; (B) in a moral or religious reference, used in the NT of the conviction and trust to which a man is impelled by a certain inner and higher prerogative and law of soul, to trust in Jesus or God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something (saving faith), mere acknowledgment or some fact or event (intellectual faith): (II) to entrust a thing to one, i.e. his fidelity; (A) to be intrusted with a thing. It is translated as "believe" 239 times. A golden rule of interrupting Scripture goes as follows: "When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense; therefore, take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths indicate clearly otherwise." I feel this is a sound guideline to follow, but is it possible that some will read, "When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense," and at this point they stop reading? Of course it is, and obviously this happens far too often. If that happens, we start forming our own opinions on what makes sense to us individually, instead of "What is the Scripture saying?" We must be very careful about trying to inject our own opinion instead of letting the Bible speak for itself.

CONSIDERATION #1

With our introductory verse (Acts 16:31) in mind, does simply saying, "I believe in Jesus" save us? Not according to the following verses (keeping in mind that this is but a small sampling): "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." Matthew 16:24 "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." Matthew 19:21 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:" John 10:27 "If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour." John 12:26 "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." James 2:18 So obviously there must be something more than just "I believe." Let us flip the coin over and look at the other side.

CONSIDERATION #2

Again with our introductory verse (Acts 16:31) in mind, are we saved by at least contributing something to our being born again? Not according to the following verses (continuing to recall that these are but a few): "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:14-15, 18 "Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." John 10:7, 9 "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." Romans 5:9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:8-10 "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory." Ephesians 1:12-13

Summation:

The first consideration above depicts a confession with the mouth but a heart that is unchanged. The second consideration above depicts an attitude of having to help God out which is a direct insult to the entire Godhead; i.e. the Father's plan was faulty and needs our help, the Son was not a sufficient sacrifice for our sins, and our works can be substituted for the work of the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to believe? The Scriptures never contradict each other. We may think they do, but they do not ... ever. To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is to commit to Him. My wife and I believed, 23 years ago, in each other to the point of committing ourselves to each other in marriage. We showed our faith in each other by uniting in marriage. Our marriage to each other is outward proof of our faith in each other. When I drive my car across the local Interstate overpass, I believe it will hold me and all the other traffic without falling through. I commit myself to it. By driving across the overpass I outwardly demonstrate my faith in it that it will hold me up. If I plant a garden, I do so because I believe vegetables will grow up from the ground. I believe in it strongly enough that I commit myself to that belief by preparing the ground and planting the seed, just as Noah believed God and built the Ark, prior to the flood. My faith is proven by my actions. When the traffic light turns green on my side, I put my faith in the light by driving forward. By doing so, my faith in the security of the light is revealed. In any of these four examples, if my faith is just "words," there will be no further action on my part that proves my faith is genuine. Jesus has said that if we believe on Him He will save us and keep us. Can we believe it? If we really believe it, we will commit to it. Do understand, we cannot do anything to earn our salvation. It is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). If it weren't for Him providing us enough faith to believe, none of us would ever believe on Jesus. We would all be lost. But in His graciousness, He provides the faith for us to use or not use. When we exercise that faith, we believe. When we really believe in something or someone we will commit to that person or thing whether it is our spouse, our job, our hobby, etc. Believing on Jesus is more than acknowledgment. If we really believe, we will commit. Once we have shown Him true belief, He does the rest as shown here: "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31 We truly believe. He saves. "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise," Ephesians 1:13 We heard and trusted. Jesus saved. The Holy Spirit sealed. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" Philippians 1:6 From the point of our salvation, the Holy Spirit will continue His work in us until the day we with are with Jesus in Glory. "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." Ephesians 4:30 When we sin, we grieve the Holy Spirit because we are now a child of God. We have been bought with a price and belong to Him. We have the seal of God upon us and will always be His, but He will now discipline us when we disobey to restore our fellowship ... not "salvation," but "fellowship." "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Isaiah 55:11 Once we have proclaimed true faith in Jesus, we have the promise that we are His, and we are His forever. I have emphatically proclaimed over the past many years that salvation is by God's grace alone apart from any works on our behalf. Nothing could be clearer on this subject than Ephesians 2:8-9. Let me see if I can explain it even more clearly. Romans 3:11 says in part, "...there is none that seeketh after God." Now why is that? Because prior to being born again (being saved) we are spiritually dead. The dead cannot react to anything. However, God the Holy Spirit places a spark of faith in us to be used when God the Father calls us to come to Him through His Son Jesus Christ. When He calls us we may then, through no credit of our own, ask Jesus to save us. It has nothing to do with how good or bad we are or anything else. It's about, "Do I believe He can and will save me, and do I want Him to save me?" Jesus often used the term, "Follow me." If we truly believe, we will follow Him. We may run. We may walk. We may limp. We may crawl, etc. but we will follow Him. Again, our works are not the issue at this point. The issue is "Do I believe in Him enough that I will put my trust in Him?" If I do, I will grow in Him because HE works in me. The entire book of James is about this very subject; i.e. believing faith. There is true faith (belief) and there is a faith (belief) that is not true. James was saying, "Just saying it doesn't make it so, but I'll prove to you I have true faith by my works. By God's grace our true faith results in salvation. Our works prove our faith was true faith. One more time: true faith results in salvation by God's grace. Works show what took place, but can never save us. If we have been truly saved, we are His forever. Works cannot save us, and sin cannot "lose" us. Faith, by His grace, results in salvation, but it cannot keep us. Only God's grace keeps us. Therefore, by God's grace: - TRUE FAITH will result in salvation for the non-Christian, but does not keep the new Christian. - WORKS cannot save the non-Christian, and cannot keep the Christian. - SIN cannot separate the Christian, but can harm the relationship of the Christian. - GRACE saves, keeps the Christian, and helps him/her to grow. In reality, if we look in the background, it is God who saves us and keeps us when we come to Him through Jesus His Son, who is the second person of the Godhead. God the Father calls us. God the Son (Jesus) saves us. God the Holy Spirit keeps us. Someone emailed me recently to imply that James 5:19-20 clearly indicates that God the Holy Spirit cannot keep us. I've read those verses many times, and still cannot come to that conclusion. These two verses are speaking of someone who is not saved and needs to come to Christ for salvation. They have nothing to do with a child of God losing their salvation. "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." True belief will result in our salvation. When Jesus was physically on earth, most of the people left Him because He asked too much. "Follow me." That is true belief or faith. If we are willing, He will make it possible. However, we cannot follow Him, no matter how much we try, if it is through our own strength (works), but if we will but trust Him by faith by the faith He supplies, He will take our hand and guide us as our Good Shepherd. We will stumble and fall many times, but He will always pick us up and guide us onward. As a Christian, we strive for good works out of appreciation and the growing love within us. Grant Phillips

What Does The Bible Say?

What Does The Bible Say?

What Does The Bible Say?
By Jack Kelley I appeal to you brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and in thought (1 Cor. 1:10).
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear (2 Tim 4:3).

I don’t believe there’s ever been a time in history when we’ve been subjected to a wider variety of opinions on what the Bible says. Some of these opinions have actually been around for a long time, while others are new to the scene. But all are now gaining a wider audience due to the advent of mass communications, especially the internet. And because today’s average Christian is woefully uninformed where the Bible is concerned, some of these opinions have gained a following that couldn’t have been possible in the past.
As as result it takes an above average level of Biblical knowledge and the full application of our spiritual discernment to figure out what is true and what is not. Fortunately the Bible, being the word of God, only teaches one doctrinal position so the diligent student can wade through all the false teaching and find the truth. Unfortunately, the number of diligent students in the Christian world seems to be at an all time low, and many are being misled. Most of this false teaching doesn’t impact a person’s salvation, it just sows confusion in the body. But some of it has resulted in a considerable number of people who think they are going to heaven because of what they’ve been taught, although according to what the Bible says they probably aren’t.
In preparing for this study, I began making a list of the various doctrinal positions now being taught, and I saw a pattern emerging. It looks to me like we’re being offered a selection of teachings which have the overall effect of fracturing the body of Christ in ways that defy coincidence. It’s almost as if some unseen force is applying the "divide and conquer" principle to deprive us of any chance we might have had to regain our lost unity in these last days.
This is in direct contrast to Paul’s teaching against allowing divisions to develop among us. The Greek word translated "divisions" in 1 Cor. 1:10 above is "schisma". Its literal meaning is a rent or tear, but it’s also used metaphorically to speak of division or dissension. The root word is the verb "schizo" which means "to cleave asunder" or "split into factions." The English word "schism" comes from here.
In Paul’s day these divisions were caused by believers preferring one teacher over another and allowing quarrels to erupt over which one was best (1 Cor. 1:11-12). Back then, there were only a few teachers involved, but because the Church didn’t heed Paul’s admonition there are now hundreds of major denominational and independent groups world wide, most of them begun because people either wouldn’t agree on what the Bible says, or willingly put their own opinions above God’s word.
So, as we begin this new year, I want to spend a few weeks reminding ourselves in the clearest possible terms what the Bible really says about the important beliefs of our faith. This is not meant to be an exhaustive study but a review of the clearest verses the Bible offers on the topics we’ll cover. In the first place exhaustive studies are often exhausting to read. Second, and more importantly, a basic rule of interpretation is to use the clearest verses on a topic to help us interpret those that aren’t as clear. (The Bible is not a book where you have to worry about the fine print or continually be on the lookout for exclusions and exceptions. It’s meant to be understood by ordinary people of average intelligence.) Finally, I’d like to keep this study simple enough so you can share it with a curious friend or loved one, or even your kids.
With that in mind let’s begin with the most critical and fundamental belief of all.

What Does It Take To Be Saved?

Understanding what the Bible says (and doesn’t say) about salvation is obviously our number one priority. Let’s begin by defining the term.
The Bible says we are all sinners (Romans 3:23). This means we’ve repeatedly violated God’s Law. How we got into this situation is a long story but the end result is that our sins have gotten us into big trouble with God. In fact the Bible says our sins are punishable by death (Romans 6:23). Being saved means to be rescued from the death penalty due us for the sins we’ve committed.
The Bible mentions two births and two deaths. The first birth and the first death are physical and relate to our physical body, which usually wears out and ceases to work after 70 or 80 years. The second birth and the second death are spiritual, and relate to our soul and spirit, which live forever.
Salvation was not intended to save people from their physical death, but from their spiritual death, which the Bible defines as being consigned to a lake of fire to be tormented forever. In Rev. 20:14 and Rev. 21:8 this lake of fire is called the second death. So in the most literal sense being saved means escaping the second death.

You Must Be Born Again

We are saved from the second death by experiencing our second birth. In some circles this is called being being born again and it’s absolutely necessary in order for us to be saved from the penalty due us for our sins.
Here’s how it works. Knowing it isn’t entirely our fault that we’re in this predicament, God promised to send His Son to pay the penalty for our sins by dying in our place. His name is Jesus, and in the eternal sense, His death has saved our lives, if we’ll let it.
In John 1:12-13 we read the following;
"Yet to all who received Him (Jesus), to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, nor of a husband’s will, but born of God."
Our first birth made us a child of our earthly parents, but our second birth makes us a child of God. It’s our second birth that qualifies us for entry into the Kingdom of God, for without it no one can enter therein (John 3:3). In John 3:6 Jesus said flesh gives birth to flesh (first birth) but the Spirit gives birth to spirit (second birth).
These verses tell us our second birth takes place when we receive Jesus and believe in His name. Receiving Him means taking Him to ourselves or making Him our own, and believing in His name means believing Jesus is the one through whom God brought our salvation. In Hebrew, the name of Jesus is Yeshua, a contraction of the phrase that means "God is salvation". His name explains what He has done, so by believing in His name we are believing in what He has done for us.
To summarize, if we’re only born once we’ll die twice, but if we’re born twice we’ll only die once. (Some of us won’t die at all, but that’s a topic for another discussion.)

Who Can Be Saved?

The Bible tells us God wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4, 2 Peter 3:9) and that whoever believes in Jesus will not perish but will have everlasting life (John 3:16). In fact it says believing that God sent Jesus to save us is the only thing God requires of us (John 6:28-29).
It also says the decision to be saved is ours to make. In Matt. 7:7-8 Jesus said everyone who asks will receive, everyone who seeks will find, and to whoever knocks the door will be opened. Paul said if we confess with our mouth, "Jesus is Lord" and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead we’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). He said everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13). The only condition is that our decision has to be made during our lifetime (Hebrews 9:27). After we die our destiny is sealed for eternity.

Did God Say That?

Everything else you may have heard about salvation is man made, not God breathed. For example;
The Bible does not say we have to agree to stop sinning in order to be saved. It does say we have to change our mind and agree we are sinners, because people who don’t think they sin don’t ask for a Savior.
The Bible does not say that before He created any of us, God selected some of us to be saved, left the rest to suffer the second death, and there’s nothing any of us can do to change that. The clearest verses on the subject tell us that God doesn’t want any of us to perish (2 Peter 3:9) but instead wants everyone to be saved (1 Tim. 2:3-4). Both the Old Testament and the New Testament tell us that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Joel 2:32, Romans 10:13).
The Bible does not say we can only be saved if God deems us worthy of such a blessing. It says we aren’t saved because of righteous things we have done but because of His mercy (Titus 3:5).
The Bible does not say we have to contribute our own effort to the salvation process. Is says we are saved by grace through faith and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9).
The Bible does not say we can be saved by simply joining a particular church or denomination. It says we have to be born again (John 3:3).
The Bible does not say we can be saved by obeying God’s Law. It says no one will be declared righteous by obeying the Law (Romans 3:20) but that we have a righteousness apart from the Law that comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe (Romans 3:21-24).
The Bible does not say we will get another chance to be saved after we die. It says we’re only given one life and when it ends we’ll face our judgment (Hebrews 9:27).
The Bible does not say we need to be baptized in order to be saved. While baptism is important, it serves as the public declaration of our private decision to join the family of God, not as a prerequisite for doing so. The Bible says we were included in Christ when we heard the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation. Having believed we were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance, until the redemption of those who are God’s possession-to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Next time we’ll look at the durability of our salvation. Did God go to the extreme lengths that were required to save us, only to leave the maintenance of our salvation in our provably incapable hands, knowing we couldn’t help but lose it? Let’s find out what the Bible says. See you then. 01-18-14

Fraud Is Driving Us Closer to the Mark of the Beast

Fraud Is Driving Us Closer to the Mark of the Beast By Todd Strandberg
As long as there has been money, people have used various forms of fraud to scam their way into wealth. This illicit activity has played out in a race between law enforcement and criminals. As technology has gotten better, crooks have used more complex tools to produce money that looks like the real thing. For hundreds of years, the battle with counterfeiters evolved at a very slow pace. When the Secret Service began tracking phony bills, most of them were drawn completely by hand because printing presses were a technology that only governments could access. As printing became more abundant, criminals had greater ability to mass produce forged bank notes. The introduction of digital printers has made it very difficult for governments to stay ahead of counterfeiters. These machines are so skilled at producing fine print that the Treasury Department has had to add an increasing number of features to maintain the security of our currency. Every few years, the Treasury will come out with a new design. Technology has advanced to a point where a new form of money is needed. Here are four reasons why I think a major change will occur: Credit Card Fraud - I'm sure most of you have read about the 110 million credit cards that were stolen from Target. The increased usage of online payment and debit cards has made this form of money a key interest for criminals. Once crooks have your account and pin number, the cards are as good as cash. They use three main methods for stealing card number information: hacking into networks, buying data from insiders, or tricking people into giving up their personal information. 3D Printing - The demise of physical currency may be the result of three dimensional printing technology. Right now, 3D printing can only work with metals and plastics, but eventually these machines will be able to work with almost any material. Someday you will be able to put a $100 bill on a scanner, and out will come a copy of the bill that is so exact, a powerful microscope would be needed to tell the difference. Crypto-currencies - The first crypto-currency to begin trading was Bitcoin in 2009. Since then over 75 other forms of digital money have been established. They all rely on cryptography to control their creation and transfer funds. What makes them popular is the fact they are anonymous and are not linked to any government. They all have a flaw that could someday make them worthless. If someone is able to get around or decipher the code that protects these crypto-currencies, they could steal them away from their rightful owners. Some types of spyware programs could be the tool for accomplishing the task. Eventually, all forms of encryption may become vulnerable as the government develops quantum computers that can instantly decipher even the toughest codes. Gold and Silver - Precious metals would seem to be resistant to any form of counterfeiting. So far, scientists haven't figured out a way to turn lead into gold, but some people have figured out how to make less valuable metals look like gold and silver. When precious metals reached a high in 2011, a large number of fake coins and bars were produced in China. Because some of them were coated with a layer of gold and silver on the outside, with a mix a cheap metals on the inside, only a coin expert could spot the fakes. The mark of the beast system will be a very evil, but its resistance to fraud would make it very appealing to folks unfamiliar with Bible prophecy. If the government is able to trace all monetary transactions in the world, a thief would be unable to use force to steal someone else's money. Even if they tricked someone into handing over a $1000, the victim could appeal to the justice system to have the transaction reversed. The War on Terror has already placed cash in a very negative light. This past week, 33 year old Conor Guckian, was arrested at the Nashville International Airport because he had $153,000 cash in his briefcase. Officials arrested him because they assumed the money was connected to drugs. Even though Mr. Guckian looked very suspicious, charging him with drug money laundering makes criminals out of everyone who carries large amounts of cash. We've come a long way since the days when author, Hunter S. Thompson, could pay for his drugs with a two million dollar check that had "cocaine" written in the memo field without the bank contacting the feds. When I first started studying prophecy, I wondered how the Antichrist would be able to get everyone to line-up and receive the mark of the beast. Back then, there were all types of civil rights watch groups, and anything that hinted of a "big brother" move by the government was automatically shot down. Today, the watchdogs are all gone and "big brother" is your friend. All the beast would need to do is get people to take the 666 mark as an offer for a safe platform for conducting financial transactions. "He required everyone--great and small, rich and poor, slave and free--to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name" (Revelation 13:16-17 NLT). --Todd Original Article
