Let Peace Be The Umpire

People continually write to me amd ask me to pray about some decision they have to make, and I tell them what I have told you many times before, just follow the peace. Believers will ask whether they should go on missions; take a job in another city; should they do “this” or “that;” should they wear black or bright colors. Okay, no one has asked me that. But you get my point.
My answer each time is what gives you the most peace? When you think about the decision you have to make, and you become anxious and start worrying about all of the details, the answer is, “NO!” It is just that easy. Seek peace! It will settle the decision once and for all!
I know someone who was sensing a call to missions. It would require her to sell everything and move around the world to work with children in crisis. And, every time she thought about it, she was happy, overjoyed, excited! There were no doubts in her mind. THAT is the peace we are to follow.
As a result of following that peace, everything was taken care of for her. The sale of her home during the recent economic downturn; Whatever she was not able to sell, she discovered people who needed them. All of the miraculous evidence, confirmed that the Lord was in this decision!
I saw this principle years ago when I read Colossians 3:15 from the Amplified Bible:
Let the peace, the soul harmony which comes from Christ rule to act as umpire continually in your hearts deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state to which as members of Christ’s one body you were also called to live. And be thankful, giving praise to God always (Colossians 3:15)
Right that passage down and paste it on your bathroom mirror! Now that last part is extremely important! Once you have your answer; once you know without question and with no hesitation or second thought, fall on your knees and thank your Lord for His guidance and direction!
Quit losing sleep rolling back-and-forth worrying and crying out for the Lord to help make your decision. He has already done it: “Let my peace rule. Let it act as the umpire. Allow my peace to be the arbitrator on every decision you have to make.
Oh, someone has argued, “But Romans 8:14 says, “ Those, who are led by the Spirit of God are the ·children of God!” Well, you silly goose! Who do you think provides that peace? He will guide you with His peace!
Oh, you may not be called to make a move around the world, but you will be living a more peaceful life! I can verify this. When they diagnosed my wife with cancer, we didn’t freak out and start crying or worrying what we would do. We walk enveloped with a sense of peace we can not describe. This peace is beyond anything we had ever experienced before in our life together. Oh, wait! Isn’t that what Paul described?
Let everyone see that you are gentle; kind; considerate; and patient. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it; that transcends and surpasses all comprehension and description, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:5-7)
So there, you go! Peace will guide you; comfort you and strengthen your faith! Whatever situation you find yourself in, peace can be your comfort. Whenever you are seeking guidance, peace can lead you. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed and unable to “keep moving on,” peace can be your strength!
When my wife called and told me she was in an accident and that car will probably be totaled, we didn’t cry and worry, “Oh what will we do without the car?” No, we allowed the Peace of God settle and guide us.
Tonight our Pastor said that the worst question we can ever ask the Lord is, “Why?” “Why did this happen;” Why am I experiencing this?” Instead, we should ask, “What?” “Lord, what do you intend to accomplish with this . . .” “What are you working in my life, so I can cooperate with you.”
As we draw closer to Him and allow Him to rule; allow Him to be our Lord, we will rest in His peace. It is when we drift away from Him; no longer fix our eyes on Him, that we find ourselves frustrated; angry; resisting His work in our lives.
Brother and sisters, I can tell you from experience, Peace is a much more enjoyable way to live!
