This week's Torah portion describes the heavenly manna that fed the
Children of Israel the entire forty years they wandered in the desert up until
they were literally in sight of the Promised Land. The Jews then went from being
directly sustained by the
manna to being sustained by the bountiful produce of the Land of
Israel. R' Samson Raphael Hirsch notes that God intended the produce of the
Land to be enjoyed as though it, too, is manna, directly provided by God. Today
thousands of needy individuals in the Land of Israel turn to God's messengers,
the volunteers of Karmey Chesed ("Vineyards of Kindness"), for basic food to
sustain themselves and their families. This winter Karmey Chesed is also
distributing blankets and heaters to warm the souls of needy elderly
residents.
