Egyptian Director to Make 'Iraqi Sniper' to Counter Eastwood's 'American Sniper'

Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, the box office smash that portrayed American hero Chris Kyle and his record of becoming the "most lethal sniper in American history," will be getting a rebuttal from Egyptian director Amr Salama.
In Eastwood's film, Kyle faced off against a villain – Mustafa – which Salama’s Iraqi Sniper will depict, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“He’s the hero in my film,” said Salama, adding that he “hated” Chris Kyle's portrayal. “I hated it. That was my inspiration — I hated it so much that I wanted to work on a different version of that story.”
Eastwood‘s R-rated war drama was critically acclaimed, won an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing, and dominated the box office, earning an impressive $547 million worldwide. Bradley Cooper snagged his third Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Kyle.
Salama's Iraqi Sniper will be set around a real-life Iraqi insurgent sniper nicknamed Jaba, though he says the movie will be anti-war.
“The same actor who played the sniper in American Sniper — Sammy Sheik — is attached to my film,” Salama said. “I’m trying to make an anti-war film. Whereas American Sniper was pro-war.”
“This story merits to be told even if American Sniper hadn’t come out,” Hefzy told THR. “He’s a very interesting character, a complex character. Amr did a lot of research and we’re trying to get his evolution right.”
The film is only in the scriptwriting stage at this point. We predict it will underwhelm at the box office.
