At a screening of Marvel’s Black Panther over the weekend in North Carolina, a fight broke out over assigned seating and ended with gunfire inside the theater.
According to The Smoking Gun, Shameka Latrice Lynch, 30, was arrested and charged with two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and a third felony count of discharging a weapon in an enclosure to incite fear. Police say Lynch and another man got into an altercation with two men over seat assignments and a single round was fired into the ceiling just before midnight on Friday. No one was injured in the shooting but the AMC 12-screen multiplex was evacuated while police investigated. The woman is currently held on a $250,000 bond.
The Wrap reports that the second suspect, Chadwick Earl Cherry, has been arrested and has received the exact same charges as Lynch. This report states that Greenville Police now consider Cherry the shooter. He was slapped with one additional charge: possession of a firearm by a felon.
There are several takeaways from this story: one, the gun-free zone designation at the theater didn’t stop these thugs; two, the gun laws which bar a felon from possessing a firearm didn’t stop these thugs; three, Black Panther was supposed to be the movie that unites the black community and brings them together to celebrate a rich, African heritage. Does this mean that more government and social justice posturing won't fix what ails America? Say it ain't so!
