This are IMO is a weak point for the magma to travel up. Weak areas are often the area magma choses of least resistance to travel. You see this is past volcanic eruptions when a volcano erupts off the side, instead of pushing up to clear it's throat of a harden magma plug leading to the top, center of the volcano.
