The meme "Truth is the new hate speech," first made popular by George Orwell, is quickly becoming the norm, even within the Church.
Fr. James Altman told Patrick Coffin Friday how cancel culture is affecting good priests.
Fr. Altman: "If we're not being divisive then we're not following Jesus — period, the end. And this pansy, wimpy, afraid-to-hurt-people's-feelings-with-the-truth is exactly why we're in the mess we're in in the Holy Mother Church."
Altman doesn't care what the establishment does to him ...
Fr. Altman: "The ignorant, lying Left."
as long as he remains faithful to Christ and feeds his flock.
Fr. Altman: "People who were condemned because they were Catholic. He was trying to bring them the Holy Eucharist. OK, so there's a message there for every bishop in this country who deny people the Holy Eucharist."
As faithful clergy like Altman and Fr. Mark White realize, salvation of souls depends on preaching the truth without equivocating.
Fr. Altman: "For the last 50 years there's been no clarity. I spoke the undeniable truth. If they don't like it, tough. Get the heck out of the Catholic Church. And that includes whether you're a priest, bishop or laity. Get out!"
Many examples of cancel culture in the world, just in the past year, include:
- My Pillow executive Mike Lindell, canceled by some 20 retailers for questioning the results of the 2020 election.
- Harry Potter's J.K. Rowling, canceled for questioning the transgender lie.
- Goya Foods, for its chief executive praising President Trump at a White House event.
- Senator Josh Hawley, dropped by his publisher for suggesting Pennsylvania violated its own constitution in the 2020 election.
- The state of Georgia, as the All-Star Game for this summer was transferred from Atlanta to Denver because of new voter reform laws.
And just last week, actor John Cena called Taiwan a country and had to apologize to China or be canceled.
John Cena: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm very sorry. You have to understand I love and respect China and Chinese people."
Cancel culture disrespects conscience, and is an attack not only on free speech, but also on truth. It's ultimately an attack on God, Who Is Truth.
Georgetown University student: "I took women's and gender studies classes. And that put me on the path where I'm, like, *#% the U.S.!"
Faithful Catholics realize human rights begin with the pursuit of truth. This includes divine Revelation and the free exchange of ideas.
