Israel, Hamas Near Deal to Free 50 Hostages

Negotiations to free 50 of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza were down to solving “minor” practical issues, the Qatari prime minister said Sunday. Qatar is brokering the talks between Israel, the U.S., and Hamas.

The deal would call for a swap of hostages in return for a multi-day ceasefire. This weekend, the Israeli military released videos of what it said were hostages being taken into the Al Shifa hospital.

The U.S. is anxious to tamp down the fighting as American public opinion swings against the war. President Biden’s approval ratings hit their lowest level as more than 70% of Democrats expressed disapproval about his handling of the war.

House Releases Suppressed Jan. 6 Footage

House Speaker Mike Johnson approved the release of thousands of hours of suppressed video from inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 that had never been seen publicly.

One of the first videos posted this weekend showed Capitol police peacefully leading protestors into the building. Many of those arrested on Jan. 6 have long clamored for the release of the full footage.

Democrats fought the release, arguing it could expose security measures used by Capitol police and endanger people shown in the film. Johnson said faces would be blurred, and some sensitive security footage wouldn’t be released.

Black Friday Discounts Higher than 2022

Early Black Friday discounts were far higher this October than in past years, signaling concerns by retailers about holiday demand. Email inboxes have been filling for weeks with Black Friday deals.

The real test will come on the actual Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, when 130 million people are expected to go shopping. Thanksgiving weekend is typically the busiest shopping period of the year in the U.S.

However, a study by WalletHub says that consumers should proceed with caution. The analysis shows that up to a third of so-called “discounts” offer no savings compared to pre-Black Friday prices.
