When is enough enough? And on the flip-side, when is “not-enough” enough? Chanukah is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating an unlikely victory and a miracle of oil. It offers us a unique opportunity to reflect on and make personal application from both of these questions related to the word “enough.” |
These fried potato pancakes are a traditional Chanukah food. Why? Because fried foods remind us of the miracle of oil that Chanukah celebrates. It’s a way of recounting the meaning of Chanukah to younger generations as God commands us in Deuteronomy 6. The abundance of oil required for frying foods also speaks of God’s delivering us from oppressions that made oil a scarce extravagance. Latkes are traditionally enjoyed with a topping of either sour cream or applesauce. Here’s one of our favorite recipes to help you make traditional Chanukah latkes yourself. |

The Dreidel Game is another Chanukah tradition. Players take turns spinning a four-sided top to win the contents of a pot they’ve each contributed to. The pot can be composed of matchsticks, candies, chocolate coins or gelt. |
Gelt is the Yiddish word for money. It has also come to represent the chocolate coins used when playing dreidel. After the Maccabees won back the Temple along with their freedom to govern themselves in Judea, they determined to mint their own currency. As a testimony to their faith in the God of Israel, their coins were stamped with the image of a menorah. Chocolate gelt is wrapped in gold, silver or copper foil and typically embossed with a menorah or Star of David. |

Follow along with the worldwide Jewish community in the weekly Torah Portion, or Parasha — a reading plan that takes us through the first five books of the Bible in a year. Many also add a “Haftorah” reading from the Nevi’im, which are the prophetic and other books of the Hebrew Scriptures. Messianic Jews often add a passage from the Gospels as well. We personally read and meditate on the Torah Portion during the week before its Shabbat reading in synagogue. |
