GAO: Federal Government Funded Nearly $2 Billion For Abortions

The report detailed $1.89 billion sent to the coffers of Planned Parenthood, International Planned Parenthood Federation, MSI Reproductive Choices and at least four domestic abortion mills.Funding was dispersed from 2019 to 2021 through avenues such as Medicaid, Medicare, grants and loans.
The distressing GAO report was spurred by a request from nearly 150 Republican lawmakers led by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). A previous study from the body showed another almost $2 billion went to abortionists from fiscal years 2016-2018.
As could be expected, the largest beneficiary of taxpayer dollars was Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).
The notorious organization carried out 1.11 million abortions from 2019 to 2021 and collected $1.78 billion. Most came from Medicare, Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program reimbursements, and still more from grants and “cooperative agreements.”
The Trump administration in 2019 enacted the Protect Life regulation barring funding for abortion-affiliated programs. This ended the grants to PPFA, at least for a time.
Not only did the Biden White House end the Trump restriction, it increased Planned Parenthood funding by a staggering 373%.
The Hyde and Helms amendments prohibited federal funds from paying directly for abortions. Unfortunately, they do not go as far as banning federal money for the providers.
Sen. Blackburn on Tuesday noted the request for GAO figures was made in Jan. 2022. “It is appalling that big abortion providers are continuing to receive billions of dollars in federal taxpayer funding,” she said.
The Republican senator recalled that Planned Parenthood “illegally siphoned over $90 million from the Paycheck Protection Program, specifically designed to help our mom and pop shops keep their doors open.”
Of course, there should be no surprise that the organization did something so disreputable, considering how it earns its money. That taxpayer funds flow into its coffers is a national disgrace that should end immediately.
