And Merrick Garland was boiling mad after one video of hymns upended this show trial. The FBI arrested 11 pro-life activists in 2021 who were peacefully protesting outside of an abortion provider in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville.
They were part of a group of roughly 25 protestors who hoped to get women to change their minds about getting an abortion.
Seven of the pro-lifers were hit with federal charges for conspiracy to interfere with civil rights and violating the FACE Act.
The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act makes it a federal crime for individuals to engage in “violent, threatening, damaging, and obstructive conduct intended to injure, intimidate, or interfere with the right to seek, obtain, or provide reproductive health services.”
The pro-lifers prayed, sang hymns, and counseled women not to get an abortion going into the Carafem Health Center Clinic.
Local police broke up the protest and filed trespassing charges against them. In October 2022, the Justice Department dropped the hammer on them by alleging that the protest was part of a conspiracy to deny women the ability to access the abortion provider and violated the FACE Act by blocking entrance.
The charges carried a potential sentence of 11 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Six of the seven pro-lifers at the Carafem Clinic are on trial in a federal court in Tennessee where videos of the protest were played.
Videos showed one of the pro-life activists telling a couple going into the clinic a “baby is a gift from God” and the group singing “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Holy Holy Holy.”
The videos showed that none of the pro-lifers were engaged in violent or threatening conduct that would violate the FACE Act. One of the protestors was recorded telling the group to not do any damage to property and to engage in peaceful behavior.
None of the pro-lifers who attended the protest were arrested on any violence-related charges.
Mount Juliet police officer Lance Schneider testified that the pro-lifers were peaceful and most of them dispersed after being warned that they would be arrested for trespassing.
Defense attorneys for the pro-lifers noted that everything from the protest was on video and that there was no attempt to injure, threaten, or intimidate women seeking an abortion.
Democrats are furious that Roe v. Wade was overturned and Biden’s Justice Department is looking for any opportunity to lash out at the pro-life community.
