California is trying to ban Walgreens Over Disagreement

On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom declared that California would not extend its multimillion dollar contract with Walgreens. The decision came after the company’s refusal to provide medication abortion in states where abortion is legal. The California Department of General Services issued a notice indicating that the planned renewal of the agreement would be withdrawn, effective May 1, 2023.

Newsom’s office released a statement stating that the state would search for other options to provide similar services.“Under this contract, Walgreens has received about $54 million from the State,” the statement said.

“California will not stand by as corporations cave to extremists and cut off critical access to reproductive care and freedom,” Newsom said. “California is on track to be the fourth largest economy in the world and we will leverage our market power to defend the right to choose.”Walgreens did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Last week, Walgreens declared its stance on abortion pills after being pressured by a group of Republican attorney generals, some of whom operate in states where abortion is permitted and others where it is banned. In a letter, the group cautioned the company of possible legal ramifications if it sold medications like mifepristone, a prevalent abortion pill, in their respective states. In response, Governor Newsom announced on Monday that the state would no longer engage in business with Walgreens as a result of the company’s decision.

“California won’t be doing business with @walgreens — or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk. We’re done,” he tweeted at the time.In a statement to NBC News on Monday, Governor Newsom’s spokesperson Brandon Richards stated that California is currently reassessing its association with Walgreens. Richards affirmed that the state will not engage in business with companies that prioritize their political agenda over women and girls’ health or give in to right-wing bullying tactics.

Walgreens spokesperson Fraser Engerman reported to NBC News last week that the company is presently not dispensing mifepristone. However, they intend to become a certified pharmacy under the program, but will only distribute the medication in jurisdictions where it is legal to do so, after being certified. Engerman acknowledged the complex and dynamic nature of the law surrounding this issue as they endeavor to obtain certification.

Vatican Reveals ‘Extraordinary Exchange’ Between Pope and Accused Cardinal

At a session of the Vatican’s corruption trial on Thursday (March 9), the Vatican’s chief prosecutor, Alessandro Diddi, presented the court with an extraordinary exchange of letters between Pope Francis and Cardinal Angelo Becciu, one of the trial’s 10 defendants, in which the cardinal pleaded with the pontiff to back his version of events and drop charges of financial malfeasance against him.

Becciu asked the pope to confirm that he had endorsed the 2014 purchase and later sale of a London real estate property that resulted in the Vatican losing millions of euros.

In a letter dated July 21, 2021, Francis expressed “surprise,” writing that Becciu’s request “immediately seemed strange to me because of the content, forms and timing.”Since “I had no other elements of evaluation, I suggested that we proceed to a preliminary consultation with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and with Father Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves, prefect of the (Vatican Secretariat for the Economy).”

The pope’s letter was in response to a July 20 missive sent by Becciu, sent two weeks after the cardinal was indicted, in which he also asked the pope to confirm that the cardinal’s dealings with Cecilia Marogna, a self-styled security analyst who is also on trial, were bound under “pontifical secret.”

Marogna, who is charged with embezzlement, was paid exorbitantly for advising Becciu, and used the payments to buy expensive designer bags and furniture, according to prosecutors.

Becciu and his lawyers have argued that the payments made to Marogna were made to negotiate the freedom of a Colombian nun who was kidnapped in Mali in 2017. In November 2022, the Vatican court heard a recording of a phone call between Francis and Becciu, in which Becciu again asked the pope to confirm that he had authorized the payment to Marogna. The telephone recording, obtained by Italian investigators who were looking into a charity linked to Becciu, was made without the pope’s knowledge or consent.

In a letter dated July 24, 2021, Becciu thanked the pope for his call and once again asked the pope to confirm his authorization. “I should cite you as a witness in the trial, but I would not allow myself to do so,” the cardinal wrote.Nevertheless, Becciu asked the pope for two statements “confirming how the events took place” regarding the London property and the payments made to Marogna.

The pope responded two days later, writing that he believed that he “had clarified, in a spirit of truth, my negative position on the declarations you intend to have me sign.”

“Evidently and surprisingly, I have been misunderstood by you,” he wrote.

Furthermore, Francis said the payments made to Marogna could not be protected under pontifical secret due to “the opaque aspects” of Becciu’s actions that were being scrutinized by Vatican investigators.

The court also heard testimony Thursday from Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti, commander of the Vatican Gendarmerie, and Vatican Police Commissioner Stefano De Santis.

Gauzzi told the Vatican judges that he and De Santis met with Becciu in October 2020 to discuss allegations that the cardinal had provided financial support to the accusers of the late Cardinal George Pell, who was convicted of child abuse charges in Australia before being acquitted on appeal.

Initially aloof, Gauzzi said, when presented with evidence of the purchases Marogna had made, Becciu “bent down on his knees and putting his hands over his face, he said, ‘If this thing comes out, it will be a serious damage for me and for my family members.’”

He also said that Becciu told the two law enforcement officers that he was willing to pay back the money spent by Marogna to the Institute for the Works of Religion, commonly known as the Vatican bank.

In a statement released Thursday, Becciu said the commander had assured him the meeting would be confidential and had assured Becciu that he was “the one being cheated.”

Becciu called Gauzzi’s testimony “yet another wound” he has suffered in the trial.

  • “Eulogy for... our hero Khairy Alqam (i.e., terrorist, murdered 7)”
  • “Oh artemisia(plant, word play on the name of the murderer Alqam)... the Jews will taste its bitterness”

A USAID-funded Palestinian high school for girls in Qalqilya in the West Bank teaches its students that terrorist murderers are “heroes” of Palestinian society.

The Al-Omariya High School for Girls posted on Facebook about a school event, which eulogized and glorified as a “hero” terrorist murderer Khairy Alqam. Alqam shot and murdered 6 Israelis and 1 Ukrainian national outside a synagogue in northern Jerusalem in January this year.

A photo from the event posted by the school shows a woman speaking into a microphone in front of a sign featuring the US flag and the logo of USAID, which funds the school:

artemisia (name of plant, “Alqam” in Arabic, a word play on the murderer’s last name -Ed.) that lets itself take control of the hatred, so that the Jews will taste its bitterness,

O goodness (“Khairy” in Arabic, a word play on the murderer’s first name -Ed.) that you consoled the soldiers of sacrifice

And the mother who moistens the prostration (i.e., the Muslim prayer rug) with her tears

And you made a covenant with our vendettas

And in the name of Allah, people like you preserve the covenant

Through you Jenin will cause destruction [to its enemies]

In order to protect Jerusalem in the land of the ancestors

And Nablus will receive an echo from you

Nablus will hear your voices

Full blessing to the female students of the club supervised by director of the club’s activities Samah Hindi and director of broadcasting activities Amna Abu Khadija”

Palestinian Media Watch has documented other incidents of terror glorification at Palestinian USAID-funded institutions, among them an exhibit at a USAID-funded university showing arch-terrorists ‎in paradise and glorifying suicide bombers, and a post by a student group at a USAID-funded university teaching that the destiny of the Muslims is to exterminate Jews.

Khairy Alqam - 21-year-old Arab terrorist and resident of Jerusalem who shot and murdered 6 Israelis and 1 Ukrainian national - Asher Natan, 14, Ilya Sosansky, 26, Natali Ziskin Mizrahi, 45, Eli Mizrahi, 48, Rafael Ben Eliyahu, 56, Irina Korolyova, 60, and Shaul Chai, 68 - and wounded 5 others outside of the Ateret Avraham Synagogue in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Neve Yaakov on Sabbath eve, Jan. 27, 2023, as some of them were coming out from prayers in the synagogue. Alqam fled the scene in a car and then opened fire on Israeli police officers, who shot and killed him. The attack took place on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
