The United Nations' official News Centre called on 8 million American ex-pats to "end" Donald Trump.
The UN News Centre tweeted its plea at 9:14 p.m. ET on Thursday, according to Politicowhich captured the tweet before it was swiftly deleted:
The tweet, published at 9:14 p.m. ET on Thursday, urged American expats to share a voter registration tool on the website of the activist organization Avaaz that states, "U.S. Citizens abroad could defeat Trump ... if they voted."
The Web page, titled "The October surprise that will end Trump," allows users to sign up for help registering to vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election and encourages them enlist their friends as well.
"At a time when Trump is trying to divide us, we could help defeat him if we all share this page with EVERYONE. Let’s reach every US voter abroad," it reads.
Politico reports that within 20 minutes of posting the highly inappropriate, partisan tweet, the UN News Centre deleted it. The News Services Section chief Ari Gaitanis told the outlet "it was a mistake."
"That tweet did not originate from the UN News Centre and this was the reason for it being taken down," Gaitanis told Politico. "We're looking into its provenance."
Well, clearly the tweet did originate from the UN News Centre's Twitter account and according to Politico, Gaitanis is in charge of that account's oversight. While the news chief may not have written the tweet himself, we think it safe to say the content clearly reflected how UN members truly feel about the U.S. presidential election. It's not as if they need to hide their bias or inappropriate actions now.
