MSNBC, CNN Pundits Reference David Duke in Summation of Trump State of the Union Address

On Wednesday, the mainstream media unsurprisingly castigated Donald Trump and his State of the Union address. Also as expected, their efforts to dismiss the President veered sharply into the realm of the absurd. Perhaps the worst: attempting to link Trump to white nationalist politician, Holocaust denier, and former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke.

As reported by Newsbusters, the race card was alive and well-played on MSNBC's Morning Joe, with political correspondent Kasie Hunt pointing out that Duke appreciated the President's statement that "Americans are dreamers too."

Duke did indeed comment via Twitter on the President's statement, posting, "Thank you President Trump. Americans are 'Dreamers' too." The implication by Hunt, however, was racism by, not even association, but affirmation. Someone should explain to Hunt that America is not a race. Furthermore, neither are illegal immigrants of one single race.

Hunt isn't the only one in need of an education regarding racial realities; less than two hours after Hunt's incendiary inference, across the dial on CNN, Newsroom's political pundit Kirsten Powers made the same suggestion.

The media are curiously loathe to connect to their own party's real affiliations with racists: Obama was mentored by anti-American, anti-white pastor Jeremiah Wright; Hillary Clinton's friend and mentor Robert Byrd was a member of the KKK. But just as facts don't care about your feelings, Democrats don't care about facts. They care about winning by narrative, and that was their M.O. Wednesday, as they looked for ways to denigrate America's Republican President.

HUNT: I think that is just going to make it really hard to get this deal done. I mean, to a certain extent, the President needed to talk to conservative hard liners in his own party who have kind of decided they think this proposal is amnesty so he needed to lay down some of those markers for them, but you know, it's not lost on Democrats that, you know, David Duke and Richard Spencer are seizing on that line, Americans are dreamers, too and saying thank you. I mean, they are reading, the context, you know, you guys were alluding to at the top of the show, very seriously. And, and, I just, right now, I came away from the speech thinking okay, tonight, a DACA deal is harder than it was when we walked into the chamber.

SCARBOROUGH: Yeah, David Duke, of course, thanking the President on Twitter.

Fewer than two hours later, this was the conversation on CNN:

POPPY HARLOW: Kirsten, look, I mean he did again push this pathway to citizenship for more than a million dreamers and would-be dreamers in this country and then he followed it by saying “Americans are dreamers too.” So, it was such, I mean that stood out to me one of the most things from last night.

POWERS: Right. And of course, nobody ever said that Americans aren’t dreamers too. This was something he is definitely doing for his base.

HARLOW: It was the context and the placement, right?

POWERS: Well, it’s something for his base. It’s something that you hear from white nationalists, David Duke praised him for saying this, thanked him for saying this. This is something that you’re hearing from his base.

Pitiful.
