The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has eclipsed 1 million, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University. The sobering milestone was reached just nine months after the first reported fatality in China last January. Public health experts believe the actual toll — the recorded deaths plus the unrecorded deaths — is much higher.

The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has eclipsed 1 million, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University. The sobering milestone was reached just nine months after the first reported fatality in China last January. Public health experts believe the actual toll — the recorded deaths plus the unrecorded deaths — is much higher. 

After months of sparring from a distance, President Trump comes face-to-face with Joe Biden in Cleveland in the first presidential debate. There’s no shortage of issues the two are expected to confront, including the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 Americans, the battle over a new Supreme Court justice and the racial justice protests that have been roiling the country. At least three people have died from a wildfire in Northern California. Two new fires are burning out of control in the area; one of them in the state’s wine country has tripled in size. CNN reports that the famed 41-year-old Chateau Boswell Winery in Napa Valley was destroyed during the Glass Fire on Sunday evening.
