FEMA Blocks U.S. Governor From Declaring National Emergency
(FreedomBeacon.com)- Texas Governor Greg Abbott has once again had his request for federal emergency support denied.
On Monday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency informed the Republican governor that they would be denying his request to declare a federal emergency in the state over the ongoing crisis at the U.S. southern border with Mexico.
On October 7, Abbott appealed FEMA’s original decision to deny Texas emergency protection measures. When granted, those measures allow states to get access to federal assistance.
Earlier this week, FEMA confirmed Texas would not be receiving any federal assistance where Abbott had requested it — in Val Verde County. That is the site of where thousands of migrants from Haiti arrived and overwhelmed officials with Border Patrol back in September.
In a letter sent directly to Abbott, Deanne Criswell, an administrator for FEMA, wrote:
“After a thorough review of all the information contained in your initial request and appeal, we reaffirm our original findings that supplemental federal assistance under the Stafford Act is not warranted for this event. Therefore, I must inform you that your appeal for an emergency declaration is denied.”
Earlier on Monday, Abbott took to Twitter to express his disgust at the White House’s handling of the surge of migrants at the southern border. He tweeted:
“The Biden Administration is AWOL at the southern border. Texas has thousands of National Guard & @TxDPS officers, including Texas Rangers, deployed to secure the border. The Lone Star State stopped the surge of illegal immigrants in Del Rio & we’re prepared to do it again.”
Roughly a week after the Haitian migrants set up a camp under the Del Rio international bridge on September 29, FEMA originally denied the request from Abbott to send federal aid. The Haitian migrants were hoping to file a claim for asylum in the southern part of Texas.
It’s just one example of how out of control things have gotten at the southern border under President Joe Biden. According to data from Customs and Border Protection, there have been more than 1.7 million encounters between migrants and border officials in the 2021 fiscal year. A majority of those happened in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
It’s something that has not escaped the notice of many lawmakers in Texas, who are now sounding off on the White House’s lack of aid and attention. Representative Chip Roy, for example, recently said:
“The denial of Governor Abbott’s FEMA request is not only a denial of reality, but a firm statement by the federal government that it is abandoning the people and the state of Texas.
“Biden and (DHS Secretary Alejandro) Mayorkas do not care about Texans, any other American or the migrants being harmed by this crisis, and they are committing impeachable offenses by failing to faithfully execute the laws of the United States.
“States — border or othersie — are left with no choice but to step up even more to protect their own borders and their own citizens due to Biden’s purposeful refusal to protect our nation.”
