Coronavirus in Canada - Alberta is finalizing a deal to secure eight to 10 intensive-care ward specialists from the military to help in hospitals amid a COVID-19 crisis in which there have been more than 1,000 new cases a day for weeks, filling intensive-care wards to almost twice the normal capacity. A Saskatchewan woman who is worried about losing her eyesight or possibly dying because her surgery for a rare cancer was cancelled in Alberta, because of overwhelmed hospitals, says the operation has been quickly rescheduled for next week.
- One of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s caucus members has been stripped of her parliamentary-assistant role for “misrepresenting” her COVID-19 vaccination status. The province is reporting 580 cases of COVID-19 today along with two more deaths linked to the virus.
- A ferry service between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Bar Harbor, Maine, is expected to start in the spring of 2022 after a three-year hiatus.
- New Brunswick is reporting 93 new cases of COVID-19 today and two virus-related deaths, bringing the pandemic’s overall death toll in the province to 66.
- Quebec is reporting 499 new COVID-19 cases today, along with one more death related to the virus.
- The pharmaceutical company is preparing to make a formal submission seeking authorization to use the product in children.
Coronavirus around the world - The United States reached the grim milestone of 700,000 deaths from COVID-19 just as cases begin to drop. And, in places like Grangeville, Idaho, where only about a quarter of the people have been fully vaccinated, vaccinate mandates are causing a “dilemma.”
- Russia reported a record 890 deaths from COVID-19 today, the fifth time in a week that deaths have hit a new high.
- Britain will soon lift quarantine rules for visitors from South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia, according to reports.
- New Zealand’s Delta-variant outbreak spread beyond the largest city of Auckland, prompting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to put additional regions into a snap lockdown.
