Growing calls for release of important COVID data
DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reportedly hiding from the public major amounts of COVID-19 data — including data regarding vaccinations — due to fear of "misinterpretation."
The New York Times reported the withheld data contains information on vaccinations, hospitalizations, COVID infections and deaths broken down by age, race and vaccination status.
CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund said the data is unreleased "because basically, at the end of the day, it's not yet ready for prime time," adding, "another reason is fear that information might be misinterpreted."
The NYT article hinted at the massive amount of data the CDC has collected:
The CDC has been routinely collecting information since the COVID vaccines were first rolled out last year, according to a federal official familiar with the effort. The agency has been reluctant to make those figures public, the official said, because they might be misinterpreted as the vaccines being ineffective.
Two weeks ago, the CDC released data on the effectiveness of vaccine boosters, but only in individuals between 50 and 65 years old. Data concerning boosters and their effects on anyone ages 18–49 was not publicizied.
They also have failed to release any data on vaccinated children's hospitalizations.
Nordlund said the CDC's "priority when gathering any data is to ensure that it's accurate and actionable." She also explained the unreleased data only represents 10% of the U.S. population and is the same sample size the CDC has used to monitor influenza in the past.
The scientific community encouraged the CDC to publish the data, claiming it would help educate the public about vaccines. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert and advisor to the Food and Drug Administration, said, "Tell the truth. Present the data. I have to believe that there is a way to explain these things so people can understand it."
Epidemiologist Jessica Malaty River, who as part of a team helped curate COVID data until March 2021, also called for the CDC to release its data: "We have been begging for that sort of granularity of data for two years. [Releasing the data] builds public trust, and it paints a much clearer picture of what's actually going on."
Social media users expressed outrage over the CDC's decision. Author and physician Nicole Saphier commented, "The CDC's response when questioned about their withholding of COVID data and lack of transparency is essentially 'we don't trust you to be able to understand the truth.' The condescension is palpable. The wheels are finally coming off."
Vaccine hesitancy may have increased recently after Pfizer released an ominous warning to the public about "deep vein thrombosis." As Church Militant reported earlier:
After explaining the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, Pfizer said on Twitter Monday, "Contact your doctor if experiencing symptoms — this is no time to wait."
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein and travels to the lungs, where it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a blockage of blood flow that can be deadly.
