Texas AG is Going to STOP This Leftist Nonsense

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton plans to defend Texas A&M University in court after leftist activists sued the school for banning drag shows on campus.

In early March, a student group called the “Queer Empowerment Council” filed a lawsuit against the Board of Regents for Texas A&M. In the lawsuit, the group claimed that the board’s decision to no longer allow drag shows on campus was a violation of the First Amendment.

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression filed the lawsuit on behalf of the “Queer Empowerment Council,” claiming that the board’s actions amounted to viewpoint discrimination, a violation of the First Amendment. The “Queer Empowerment Council” is especially angry because their drag festival, “Draggieland,” can no longer be hosted on campus.

Responding to the lawsuit, Paxton highlighted the fact that Texas A&M, a publicly-funded university, had no obligation to host “obscene” drag performances. He also announced in the statement that he would be representing the board in court.

“Our colleges and universities exist to help students learn and equip them as they take their next steps in life,” Paxton explained in a statement to The Daily Wire. “They are not, and have never been, a place for taxpayer-funded drag shows where men pretending to be women engage in obscene, offensive, and degrading behavior.”

“Texans’ tax dollars should not fund or be used for vulgar assaults on our values, which is why I’m defending the Board’s ban on these shows against frivolous lawsuits launched by left-wing radicals,” the Texas attorney general added.

The Board of Regent’s decision came in a resolution published on February 28, where board members stated that drag shows were “inconsistent” with the Texas A&M’s mission because the performances “involve sexualized, vulgar or lewd conduct” and “involve conduct that demeans women.”

The board also explained in the resolution that drag shows clearly create a hostile environment for women, a violation of Title IX in the university’s public spaces.

The board’s resolution cited President Donald Trump’s executive order directing federal funding to be cut from all institutions caught promoting gender ideology, as well as a letter from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) ordering state agencies to comply with Trump’s order.

According to the board, “both the System and the Universities receive significant federal funding, the use of facilities at the Universities for Drag Show Events may be considered promotion of gender ideology in violation of the Executive Order and the Governor’s directive.”
