NEW FUKUSHIMA NIGHTMARE FOR JAPAN UTILITY How does one store a million tons of radiated water – forever?

There’s a building boom going on at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan where on March 11, 2011, as the coast was catastrophically flooded by an earthquake-triggered tsunami, three of the six reactors melted down.
But it’s not the kind that signals progress.
Tepco, which owns the site, has built hundreds of massive storage tanks to hold the radioactive water that is leaking from the disaster.
According to a report by Vince Beiser at Wired, the tanks contain as much as 150 tons of groundwater that percolates into the reactors through cracks in their foundations every day.
The water is contaminated with radioactive isotopes during the process, the report said.
“More than one million tons of radiation-laced water is already being kept on-site in an ever-expanding forest of hundreds of hulking steel tanks – and so far, there’s no plan to deal with them,” Beiser warned.
To contain the radiation as much as possible, Tepco “pumps it out and runs it through a massive filtering system housed in a building the size of a small aircraft hangar.”
“Inside are arrays of seven-foot tall stainless steel tubes, filled with sand grain-like particles that perform a process called ion exchange. The particles grab on to ions of cesium, strontium, and other dangerous isotopes in the water, making room for them by spitting out sodium. The highly toxic sludge created as a byproduct is stored elsewhere on the site in thousands of sealed canisters.”
The report explained there have been improvements in the filtering system since the disaster seven years ago, but none of the processes so far has been able to catch tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen.
“Cesium and strontium atoms go into solution with the water, like sugar in tea; but tritium can bond with oxygen just like regular hydrogen, rendering the water molecules themselves radioactive,” the report said.
“It’s one thing to separate cesium from water, but how do you separate water from water?” John Raymont, president of Veolia’s nuclear solutions group, asked in the report.
His company has suggested a possible method, but Tepco so far has balked at the multi-billion dollar cost, the report said.
“So for now, the tritiated water is pumped into a steadily growing collection of tanks. There are already hundreds of them, and Tepco has to start building a new one every four days.”
In attempts to cut back on the number of tons, Tepco already installed a $300 million wall underground in which the ground is frozen by having tons of sub-zero brine pumped in.
That’s helped, the report said.
But all of the contaminated water can’t be stored indefinitely, Wired said.
“Some of those tanks and pipes will eventually fail. It’s inevitable,” Dale Klein, a former head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, told the publication.
Klein says the concentrations are low enough that the water can safely be released into the sea, Wired reported, but “the notion of dumping tons of radioactive water into the ocean is understandably a tough sell.”

Abbas' advisor repeats antisemitic PA narrative:
Europe's Jews "had a monopoly over the economy,"
and so Europe supported Zionism to get rid of the Jews

The antisemitic Palestinian Authority narrative that Zionism was a European scheme to get rid of the Jews, because Jews were damaging European society, was repeated last week by a senior advisor of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Mahmoud Al-Habbash charged that after WWII Europe supported the establishment of Israel because they "wanted to get rid of the presence of the Jews of Europe."

Al-Habbash, one of the most important religious figures in the PA, repeated the PA narrative that the European animosity toward the Jews was because the Jews "had a monopoly over the economy and capital" - a particularly absurd accusation following WWII, and the destruction of most of European Jewry in the Nazi concentration camps.

Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Abbas' Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs:
"After World War II ended, the colonialist states wanted to get rid of the presence of the Jews of Europe, who had a monopoly over the economy and capital. Therefore, they supported these claims and helped them establish their state on the land of Palestine at the expense of the Palestinian people, who are still suffering from this crime."
[Official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 24, 2018]
Al-Habbash made these statements during his "religious and political lecture" at a conference in Sudan.

Palestinian Media Watch has reported on the centrality of the PA messaging that Zionism was supported by Europeans because they wanted to get rid of the Jews, as it supports the Palestinian narrative that Israel is a foreign and "colonial project," and therefore has no right to exist.

Abbas himself expressed this falsehood in a speech to PLO Central Council earlier this year:
Abbas: "There is an important matter - the Jews' immigration [to Palestine]. The Jews did not want to immigrate, not even because of killing, slaughter. They did not want to immigrate. Even during the Holocaust that took place, they did not immigrate [to Palestine]. They did not immigrate... [Theodor] Herzl (i.e., founder of modern Zionism) used to say: 'Antisemitism is the engine of Zionism. The more antisemitic a person is the more beneficial he is to us because he advances the Zionist goal by expelling the Jews.' They [the Europeans] wanted to get rid of the Jews there for their reasons and to benefit from them in our land - killing two birds with one stone."
[Official PA TV, Jan. 14, 2018]
PMW has reported on the fundamental antisemitic beliefs of Abbas' advisor Mahmoud Al-Habbash. In a televised Friday sermon in 2015, Al-Habbash taught that the conflict with Israel is the continuation of the historic conflict with the Jews, because Jews represent "evil," "falsehood," "the Devil," and "Satan." Accordingly, Israel is "Satan's project" and the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is between "Allah's project vs. Satan's project."

The following is the report on Al-Habbash's recent statements in the official PA daily:
"Supreme Shari'ah Judge of Palestine, [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas'] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash discussed with Sudanese Minister of Guidance and Endowments Abu Bakr Othman Ibrahim... bilateral relations and expanding the cooperation between the two states...
Al-Habbash also gave a religious and political lecture at the end of the events of the 21st Season of Culture and Dawah (i.e., preaching), which is organized by the Islamic University in Omdurman, Sudan...
During the lecture, Al-Habbash refuted the claims that the Israeli occupation is spreading against Palestine and its residents by falsifying history and the religious and political facts through fabricated and false myths.
He said: 'After World War II ended, the colonialist states wanted to get rid of the presence of the Jews of Europe, who had a monopoly over the economy and capital. Therefore, they supported these claims and helped them establish their state on the land of Palestine at the expense of the Palestinian people, who are still suffering from this crime.'"

Egypt: Muslims shouting “Allahu akbar” smash church’s doors and windows, throw stones at Christian homes

Largely ignored by mainstream media and Western politicians is the relentless persecution and slaughter of Christians in the Middle East. Christians continue to be slaughtered in Egypt on a regular basis, but the world yawns. The Muslim persecution of Christians in the Middle East has decimated centuries-old communities and has the Christians of Egypt living under constant threat, and all the enemedia ever talks about is islamofauxbia.
There won’t be any reprisals, no cruise missiles, no outrage in the UN.
The carnage brought to us by the religion of peace will continue so long as the root cause is ignored. While the West continues to deny the truth about Islam and the directives within the Quran demanding bloody Jihad, there is no hope of stopping this. The doctrine of Islam is fundamentally violent — period. We can expect no reform, as the core text requires the kuffar to submit or be slain. Allah says Islam is perfected. How can one reform what is perfected?
And Pope Francis will continue to exhort us that Islam is peace, even as Christians continued to be targeted by Muslims in Egypt. One day, the way things are going, they will attack the Vatican, and the Pope will lock himself inside and ponder what he has enabled as the Muslim mob rages outside.
“Egypt church application triggers attack,” World Watch Monitor, April 19, 2018:
…The government has legalised 219 churches and church-affiliated buildings this year, but 3,511 others remain on the waiting list.
The churches were built without licence as it was “next to impossible” to build or restore a church until the Law for Building and Restoring Churches was passed in September 2016. The demand for official church buildings is a response to growing congregations and the declining condition of existing churches, according to Coptic news site Watani….
Most recently, the Virgin Mary and Pope Kyrillos VI Church in Beni Meinin, Beni Suef Governorate, was attacked on 14 April, the same day as a visit by the Building Authority Committee who came to inspect the building in preparation for legalising its church status.
The church’s 700 Coptic members, who had used the building as a church for 10 years, had also applied for the building to be expanded.
Local sources told World Watch Monitor that Muslim villagers had heard about the morning inspection and then, at about 7pm, attacked the church and some nearby Coptic homes.
“Many Muslim young men from our village and villages nearby gathered in front of the church building and began pelting it with stones and bricks while shouting ‘Allahu akbar’ [Allah is the greatest], and ‘We don’t want a church in our village’,” said Medhat Halim, a resident in the village.
“Windows and a door were smashed and some of the church’s contents destroyed. They also pelted Coptic-owned houses next to the building. Five Copts received minor injuries.”
Security forces arrived at the village an hour later and arrested 20 Muslims and 12 Christians. Some were released the next morning but 11 Muslims and nine Christians were later charged with “gathering” (illegal for more than 10 people under 2016’s demonstration laws) and the possession of unlicensed arms, and were jailed for four days, later extended to 15 days.
More Coptic homes were attacked two days later (16 April), despite the presence of security forces in the village.
“Some Muslim villagers had a meeting in one of the mosques. They incited people against us. After the meeting they set fire to a wood store owned by my brother, and four other houses,” said Christian resident Magdy Nady.
Police arrested five Christians as they tried to extinguish the fires.
“The police are conniving with Muslim villagers. We were attacked, our homes destroyed, some of us arrested – where are our rights? The Muslim villagers are now pressing us to reconcile under the condition that we close the church. We refuse to do that,” Nady said.
“There is a situation of fear and panic among the Christians and there isn’t any protection for us.”
By the time the Coptic homes were attacked, police had arrested 16 Copts in connection with the unrest. Many other young Copts left the village for fear of being arrested. Nady said the police made the arrests to force the Copts into a Customary Reconciliation Session (formal village meeting) where, in exchange for an end to the rioting, the Copts would give up their plans for a licenced church.
