Because of His everlasting covenant with the People of Israel, God has
compassion for them. In
Hebrew, the word for compassion, ‘rachamim’, comes from the word that means
womb, ‘rechem.’ A mother always has compassion for the child she lovingly
carried for nine months in her womb. We pray for God to have the same compassion
upon His children, who He has lovingly carried for millennia. And when we show
compassion to others, we emulate one of God’s Holy attributes. More than 70
years has passed since World War II and the Shoah, but thousands of people are
affected by the horrors they witnessed and struggle to make it through the day.
What better way to display love and affection than supporting the survivors
still living among us and showing them they are cared for and deeply
respected?
