But Hashem was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of His covenant with Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, and would not destroy them, neither hath He cast them from His presence until now.

Shabbat Inspiration

Because of His everlasting covenant with the People of Israel, God has compassion for them. In Hebrew, the word for compassion, ‘rachamim,’ comes from the word that means womb, ‘rechem.’ A mother always has compassion for the child she lovingly carried for nine months in her womb. We pray for God to have the same compassion upon His children, who He has lovingly carried for millennia. And when we show compassion to others, we emulate one of God’s Holy attributes. Emulate God and support Israel's hungry in their great time of need.

Today's Israel Photo

The Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit HaKerem as seen in today's photo was founded in 1922 as one of six garden cities developed in the Holy City during the days of the British Mandate. It is named for the biblical city of Beit Hakerem which is mentioned in Jeremiah (6:1) and Nehemiah (3:14). The beautiful town has continued to maintain its stunning character for decades and is now home to approximately 15,000 people.
