On Tue., November 14th, 2017, CNN released a harrowing report that chronicle modern-day slave auctions that take place in and around Tripoli, Northern Libya. These auctions involve the selling of “African migrants” who travel northward all the way from Western Africa towards European nations such as Italy, in search for better opportunity.
On their way towards their destination, Libya is one of the countries along the Central Mediterranean migration routes that they must travel through… There, some of the people have reported horrific “slave markets” where they are sold for as much as $400, also known as the "Libyan slave trade"… others have reported beatings, mutilations, smuggling, and even sexual abuse while forced to remain in detention centers all across Libya — similar to concentration camps. This is where they remain until they are repatriated back to their home country…
Of course, there is much more occurring behind the scenes, and a lot of undocumented cases behind closed doors… According to a UNICEF child alert report released as of Feb. 2017, as of September 2016, an estimated 256,000 migrants have been identified in Libya, of which 28,031 are women (11%) and 23,102 are children (9%), with a third of this group including unaccompanied children. The real figures are believed to be at least
three times higher. Over 180,000 migrants attempt to reach Italy, including more than 25,800 children.
Trafficked people passing through Libya have previously reported violence, extortion and slave labour. But reports from the International Organization for Migration suggests that the trade in human beings has become so normalized that people are being traded in public.
But who are the REAL Culprits behind these events in Libya?!
