Almost every parent in the world wants nothing more than to keep their baby happy, healthy, and safe. And if their child is suffering in any way, especially from a terminal illness, they’ll do everything in their power to find treatment as soon as possible—even if it means leaving the country.
Sadly, that was the situation Chris Gard and Connie Yates of the United Kingdom were faced with. They were the parents of an eight-month-old named Charlie, who had a rare genetic disorder for which there was no known cure.
However, there was hope in the form of an experimental treatment. The problem? It was in the United States. Still, Chris and Connie were desperate to find a treatment for Charlie, even if it meant going to another continent. That’s when doctors told them something that shook them to their core.
Chris Gard and Connie Yates of the United Kingdom thought that their baby, Charlie, was as healthy as could be when he was born on August 4, 2016. Eight weeks later, however, his health began to mysteriously deteriorate. They immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he’d been ever since.
