Dutch Antisemitism Reaches Five-Year High, Despite Scant Jewish Population

Cases of reported antisemitism in the Netherlands have hit five-year highs — despite the fact that the region has a extremely low population of Jewish people.

The Dutch Public Prosecution Service reported that of the 144 hate crime attacks in the Netherlands in 2017, 41 percent were targeting Jews. Only 7 percent, by comparison, targeted Muslims.

That’s double the number of attacks against Jews from 2016.

An estimated 0.2 percent of the Dutch population are Jews, out of a total population of 17 million.

Of 60-plus criminal cases of anti-Semitism in 2017, including intimidation, assault, incitement to violence and vandalism, more than two-thirds revolved around soccer, and Amsterdam’s Ajax team specifically, which rival fans and supporters call “Jews.”

Among 117 cases of vandalism, 28 incidents involved anti-Semitism, representing a 20-year high and a 40 percent increase over 2016.

But what’s most significant about the rise in attacks on Jews is that only 0.2 percent of the Dutch population are Jewish.

That means Jews are facing targeted attacks, much more so than other demographics and religions.
