Today's Israel Inspiration

In the days before Rosh Hashanah, we bless one another with a "Shana Tova v'Metuka" - a good and sweet year. Why do we give a blessing for both "good" and "sweet" - aren't they one and the same? Sometimes things may look bad in our eyes, but Judaism teaches that everything that God does is good. Since often it is difficult for us to feel the ultimate good in a challenging situation, we bless each other that the year should be a "revealed" good, one that tastes "sweet" to us. This is the reason why on Rosh Hashana we dip an apple into honey - to "sweeten" the blessings in our lives!

Hebrew Music Monday:
"Joy to Your Land"

The words for today's beautiful Hebrew song were taken from the Rosh Hashana prayers. Sing along with the great Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach with our helpful Hebrew transliteration!

Pomegranate Calligraphy Print

The pomegranate is often associated with the Jewish New Year when we eat pomegranates to show our hope that we will perform all the commandments over the coming year. Look closely and here you'll see that this gorgeous print is composed entirely of blessings from the Torah blended together to form a ripe red pomegranate. This beautiful piece of art is by talented artist Ellen Miller Braun, sharing her love of Zion and the Bible with a unique talent.

Today's Israel Photo

Rebecca Kowalsky's beautiful photograph of a beach in Nahariya, Israel's northernmost coastal city. The name "Nahariya" comes from the Hebrew word "nahar" which means "river".
