In the days before Rosh Hashanah, we bless one another with a "Shana Tova
v'Metuka" - a good and
sweet year. Why do we give a blessing for both "good" and "sweet" - aren't they
one and the same? Sometimes things may look bad in our eyes, but Judaism teaches
that everything that God does is good. Since often it is difficult for us to
feel the ultimate good in a challenging situation, we bless each other that the
year should be a "revealed" good, one that tastes "sweet" to us. This is the
reason why on Rosh Hashana we dip an apple into honey - to "sweeten" the
blessings in our lives!
