Sayfullo Saipov, the 29-year-old Uzbek man accused of running down pedestrians on a bike path this week, planned to continue his attack on the Brooklyn Bridge, according to CNN. He also wanted to show his dedication to ISIS by displaying their flag in the hospital room where he is recovering from gunshot wounds he sustained when police stopped the attack.
Saipov waived his right to silence when he appeared in court on Wednesday and told investigators that he had planned the attack, which killed eight, for about a year. He had hoped that the crowds of people celebrating Halloween would maximize casualties in what was the deadliest attack on New York City since September 11, 2001.
A source at the US Attorney's Office told CNN that he did not enter a plea to federal terror charges. Saipov is charged with providing material support to ISIS, violence and destruction of motor vehicles. The charges carry the possibility of the death penalty.
