The Centers for Disease Control announced today it will end Title 42 next month. The COVID emergency policy has enabled Border Patrol agents to turn away thousands of illegal immigrants showing up at our overwhelmed southern border. Church Militant's Kim Tisor takes a look at what the policy's removal could mean for the border and the country at large.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas: "This is a humanitarian crisis. It's a public-health crisis. It's a national-security crisis. And, right now, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris refuse to do a damn thing about it."
The Biden administration does have a plan. Next month, the CDC will lift Title 42 — making things worse.
Kate Bedingfield, White House communications director: "And we have every expectation that when the CDC ultimately decides it's appropriate to lift Title 42, there will be an influx of people to the border."
Due to the pandemic, President Trump implemented the policy as a way to quickly expel immigrants at the border. Border Patrol agents warn ending Title 42 will supercharge the ongoing crisis. Agents already expect to encounter 2.5 million illegals this year — that's the population of Chicago.
Rep. Tony Gonzalez, R-Texas: "The agents on the ground, they are working their tails off. And their mental health — they're beyond broken. You know, their suicide rates are historic."
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have urged Biden to keep Title 42 intact. It's one of the few tools Border Patrol agents have to prevent worsening chaos.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.: "We can't only be a sovereign nation during pandemics. Americans deserve secure borders all the time."
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security anticipates 18,000 immigrants will cross into our country each day once Biden lifts Title 42. They'll likely be shipped all across the United States, effectively turning each state into a border state.
Customs and Border Protection sources reveal more than 62,000 illegal immigrants circumvented Border Patrol agents just last month. That averages about 2,000 immigrants per day.
