"He should be on this stage tonight," Ron DeSantis said, along with criticism of the Trump administration's addition to the national debt.  Several candidates attacked Ramaswamy for his business dealings in China and use of TikTok, and Nikki Haley and Tim Scott squared off over tax policy.  DeSantis received praise in post-debate spin for his "presidential" performance, and he is the only candidate besides Trump polling in the double digits, although he still trails the former president by a huge margin.  Target to Shut Down Nine Stores in Big Cities Target says it will close nine stores in major cities due to crime and violence at those locations, including New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland. The retailer says the nine stores will close for good on Oct. 21 and workers will be reassigned to other stores if possible. While some critics say they think the level of theft is overstated, store officials say the threat of violence in these locations is the issue.  “We cannot operate these because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests,” the company said.  California OKs Special Tax on Guns and Ammo California has become the first state to levy a special tax on guns and ammunition, adding an 11% tax on top of the existing federal tax of 10%-11% on firearms and bullets. The money raised is meant to pay for better security at public schools. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a second firearms law along with the tax bill, banning people from carrying concealed weapons in most public places. Newsom acknowledged the measure might not pass constitutional review. The signings came days after the state legislature approved calling a state Constitutional Convention to consider additional federal gun regulations, but that requires two-thirds of all states to agree.
