Former Secret Service agent-turned-podcaster Dan Bongino gave a heartfelt, emotional goodbye to his podcast and radio show after he was asked by President Donald Trump to serve as deputy director of the FBI.
On the evening of February 23, Trump announced that his FBI Director, Kash Patel, had chosen Bongino as deputy director of the bureau. In the post, Trump noted the fact that Bongino — who he deemed “a man of incredible love and passion for our Country” — has great qualifications for the role.
“Dan has a Masters Degree in Psychology from C.U.N.Y., and an MBA from Penn State. He was a member of the New York Police Department (New York’s Finest!), a highly respected Special Agent with the United States Secret Service, and is now one of the most successful Podcasters in the Country, something he is willing and prepared to give up in order to serve,” he wrote.
Bongino immediately accepted the position, which prompted questions about his future as a podcaster and radio host.
Bongino answered those questions in an emotional speech during his show the following morning, revealing that he planned to leave his show and return to law enforcement.
He began the broadcast by asking a simple question to his audience, the overwhelming majority of whom were fully aware of his new position. “All right. How do you start today’s show?” Bongino asked.
Bongino then referenced a “man card” that he was once given, offering to give it up temporarily because he knew that he would be getting emotional during the broadcast.
“I got a call from the president, and he couldn’t have been nicer,” he said. “Obviously I’ll keep the contents between us but I think you get the gist of what it was about … this is now real.”
“The president, Attorney General Bondi, and now Director — gosh, that sounds good to say — FBI Director Kash Patel offered this role, a role I expressed an interest in, and ladies and gentlemen —” he continued, pausing as he began to choke up.
“I’m going to accept the role, proudly, as the deputy director, the number two spot at the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Bongino added.
He went on to thank his viewers and address some of their concerns.
“Folks, it’s a lot to walk away from,” he said, noting that he had plans for his show and would be able to share them soon. “I love you guys, and Bongino Army out there, I hope you understand, I got a couple of negative comments you know, ‘Dan, you should have let us know.’ I hope you understand … you do not ever get ahead of the President of the United States.”
