CA Dems Want to Fine Waiters $1,000 for Offering Plastic Straws

More reasons not to live there.

California Democrats have proposed a new law that would slap a stiff $1,000 fine on waiters who offer diners plastic straws for their beverages. Reason number 5,386 not to live in that state!
This insane idea is the brainchild of state house Democratic majority leader Ian Calderon who thinks a 6-month jail sentence pairs nicely with that large fine.
His reasoning?
"We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans.”
According to Reason.com, these “straws-on-request laws” have already been enacted in the cities of San Luis Obispo and Davis. Manhattan Beach prohibits all disposable plastics and, of course, single-use plastic bags have already been banned statewide. Starting in July in Seattle, Washington, restaurants will no longer be allowed to offer plastic straws or utensils. Democrats gotta meddle.
Reason also notes that the Los Angeles Times is all for the law and adds a non-ecosystem drawback to using disposable straws: lip wrinkles caused by “repetitive sucking.” That’s not such a big deal on Botox Rodeo Drive.
There’s no way to count how many plastic straws are deposited into the environment annually to justify such a penalty. California has a yearly Coastal Cleanup Day that has logged a total of 835,425 plastic straws and coffee stirrers which makes up about 4 percent of the total trash collected. And that’s after collecting them over 30 years!
Reason updated its story to reveal that Assemblyman Calderon is looking into removing the $1,000 fine from the bill. But with “leaders” like this in the state, who are willing to do this to voters, is there any reason to live in California?
