Attorney: SF Deputies Staged Gladiator-Style Games with Inmates
In San Francisco, inmates at the Hall of Justice are accusing the county sheriff’s deputies of forcing them to participate in “gladiator-style” fights for casino-style entertainment.
Jeff Adachi, public defender in San Francisco made the announcement after his office received an email from the father of one of the inmates.
According to Adachi, the email recounts the plight of Ricardo Garcia who is incarcerated on the 7th floor of the San Francisco County jail and assigned to kitchen duty.
Garcia recalled deputies Scott Neu, Eugene Jones, Clifford Chiba and Evan Staehely, forced him to fight another inmate named Stanley Harris.
Harris described the incident: “…while I’m incarcerated, Deputy Neu made me fight another individual that we’re – we’re housed in the same tank. He made us fight. We had like two fights already. It’s like, uh, he would make us go to like a – like a (inaudible) to where nobody can see, and he would make us just wrestle and fight each other to his own entertainment.”
Garcia told Adachi: “I don’t know why he does it, but I just feel like he gets a kick out of it because I just see the look on his face. It looks like it brings him joy by doing this, while we’re suffering by what he’s doing.”
Adachi wrote to San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, requesting the removal of those deputies from their post; including barring any further contact between them and Garcia.
A pro-bono investigation has been initiated by Barry Simon, a private investigator.
Mirkarimi first complied with Adachi’s requests and reassigned the deputies and ensured no more contact with inmates; then decided to place those deputies on paid administrative leave.
This game of musical chairs included the relocation of Garcia to the San Francisco jail in San Bruno.
