Will Newt Gingrich end up as Donald Trump's vice-presidential pick? Stranger things have happened.
Gingrcih, who was a flash in the pan for the 2012 presidential contest but was the House Republican speaker in the 1990s that forced budget and criminal justice reform on Bill Clinton, is seen as a defender of Trump and his policies in the media and is a top contender, according to theWashington Post blog The Fix.Gingrich checks many of the boxes that Trump has said he is looking for in a vice president: someone who knows Washington, understands policy and gets how Congress works. Plus, Gingrich was a relatively early supporter of Trump and has grown increasingly close to the real estate mogul, as detailed by National Review’s Eliana Johnson.
The fact that Gingrich has had multiple marriages and divorces would matter less to Trump than other candidates since their lives mirror each others.
Other names on the list include Chris Christie; Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin; Bob Corker, the senator from Tennessee; and Joni Ernst, the junior senator from Iowa.
