When I was a young religious in the late 70's and early 80's, modernism was all the rage. I was too young to see what was going on back then, but looking back now I can see that a lot of the ideas that I was exposed to ran contrary to Church teaching and Holy Scripture. The effect of all this was to destruction of the faith of individuals, the mass exodus from religious life, of which I was one, the drying up of vocations and the huge decline in Church attendance. The evil of modernism is that it destroys the Church from within, and is therefore much worse than persecution from without.
