In many cases, free speech and diversity of opinion are actively stifled, creating environments of fear and closed-mindedness.

It is no secret that many of America’s so-called institutions of higher learning are entirely compromised by the radical far Left. Not only do these institutions famously stifle any opinions that do not align with their Marxist agenda, but individuals who align with these opinions are often silenced and alienated.
This is exactly what happened to Maggie DeJong, an Art student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). After sharing her opinion about the widely discussed Kyle Rittenhouse case, in her case supporting Kyle Rittenhouse’s right to defend himself, the university began its reign of terror against her.
DeJong made a post on her private Instagram page supporting Rittenhouse, which caused three fellow students to request no contact orders from DeJong, which the university happily granted. Furthermore, DeJong alleged that the university actively encouraged students to raise the alarm if DeJong made any other similar posts or comments.
DeJong promptly got in touch with the lawyers at the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), who took her case.
As a result, DeJong was awarded $80,000 from the university, and the university has since changed its policies regarding matters like this.
Following the legal victory, ADF Legal Counsel Mathew Hoffmann issued a statement reading “Maggie, like every other student, is protected under the First Amendment to respectfully share her personal beliefs, and university officials were wrong to issue gag orders and silence her speech.” He added, “As a result of Maggie’s courage in filing suit, SIUE has agreed to take critical steps to comply with the law and the U.S. Constitution and move closer to accepting and embracing true diversity of thought and speech.”
The Left’s push to police free speech is alarming and un-American
This case out of Illinois is a good step in the right direction, however, there is still much to do when it comes to standing up to the radical Left.
Whether it is punishing conservative students, alienating them from university events, or even segregating them from the classroom, the Left is determined to stifle free speech on most college campuses.Such partisanship goes against everything that higher learning stands for, and many Americans would agree that these moves cheapen the degrees that these institutions offer.
