India has banned white rice exports in a domestic attempt to put a halt to soaring food inflation, but the move raises fears of increases in global food prices. Wheat and corn prices were already sent skyrocketing after Russia terminated its Black Sea grain deal. India is the world’s largest exporter of rice. Thailand and Vietnam are the world’s second- and third-largest exporters of rice. Rice from both of these countries have also hit the highest price levels in years. After the announcement, store shelves emptied in some parts of the U.S. as consumers began panic-buying rice.

Rapture: The event described in 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 in which all believers, resurrected and living, will be instantaneously “caught up together” in the air or in the clouds. This sudden and unexpected event is also mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:52 and describes the removal of people from earth to meet Jesus in the air, entering into the presence of God. The English word “rapture” doesn’t appear in the Bible, but it comes from the Latin translation rapturo of the Greek word harpazo, which is the basis for the phrase “caught up” in the 1 Thessalonians 4 passage.

The timing of the Rapture is the subject of debate within Christianity, but many Bible teachers (including me) believe it will happen before the Tribulation. This is known as the Pre-Tribulation Rapture.

August brings a rare double supermoon sighting, and this “blue moon” phenomenon isn’t scheduled to repeat until 2032. Two of the four supermoons of 2023 happen this month. (A supermoon is when the moon is closest to earth, in terms of its orbit, during the full moon phase.) The first supermoon was August 1 and the next will be August 30:

While the term “supermoon” references the moon’s orbit in relation to Earth, a blue moon has to do with frequency, referring to when there's a second full moon in a single calendar month, NASA says. “Blue moon” is also used to describe the third of four full moons in an astrological season.
