(StraightShooterNews.com) – A shocking betrayal of public trust has unfolded as a former USPS employee and her co-conspirators were sentenced for a staggering $24 million heist worth of checks from the mail.

Nakedra Shannon, a former mail processing clerk at a USPS distribution center in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for her role in the massive check theft scheme.

Shannon, who worked at the facility from March 2021 to July 2023, exploited her position to pilfer millions of dollars worth of checks from unsuspecting citizens and businesses.

The scale of this operation is truly mind-boggling. U.S. Attorney Dena J. King revealed that the scheme involved “stolen checks worth more than $24 million.”

This includes over $12 million in checks brazenly posted for sale on the Telegram messaging platform and more than $8 million in stolen U.S. Treasury checks.

Interestingly, Shannon did not act alone in this elaborate scheme. Her co-conspirators, Desiray Carter and Donell Gardner, each received 54-month prison sentences for their roles in the operation.

The trio worked together to steal incoming and outgoing checks from the U.S. mail, which Gardner and Carter then sold to other individuals, including through a Telegram channel called “OG Glass House.”

The criminals also obtained hundreds of thousands of dollars in illicit proceeds before justice finally caught up with them.

Shannon, Carter, and Gardner have been ordered to pay $113,333.87 in restitution in addition to their prison sentences.

It took a coordinated effort by multiple federal agencies, including the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, IRS-Criminal Investigation, and the U.S. Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, along with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, to bring these criminals to justice.

While sentencing these individuals is a step in the right direction, it raises serious questions about the security measures in place at USPS facilities.

In an era where digital communication reigns supreme, those who still rely on traditional mail services deserve the assurance that their correspondence and financial documents are safe from the prying hands of criminals—especially those wearing postal uniforms.

Shannon and her co-conspirators’ breach of trust serves as a wake-up call regarding the oversight of individuals entrusted with public responsibilities.

This incident underscores the need for vigilance and improved security measures to prevent similar occurrences. Such breaches threaten public resources and tear at the fabric of trust upon which community services are built.
