Obama Thanks Press for Working Side-by-Side with Him to 'Strengthen Our Democracy'

Media lap dogs applaud.

President Obama wasn't all jokes during his last White House Correspondents' Dinner. He also took the last moments of his final speech to warmly thank the press for working with him to "strengthen our democracy."

That's not surprising coming from the man whom the media has all but coddled his entire presidency. Whether they were featuring his image graced with a crowning, savior-like halo or outright calling him America's savior, the press by-and-large was very good to Barrack Hussein Obama.

The president's warm words included a short lecture on the importance of everyone agreeing on "a baseline of facts." Who gets to decide what those "facts" are wasn't made clear, but was implied to be whatever President Obama tells the media. He said to them, rather ominously:
"Taking a stand on behalf of what is true does not require you shedding your objectivity. In fact, it is the essence of good journalism. It affirms the idea that the only way we can build consensus, the only way we can move forward as a country, the only way we can help the world mend itself is by agreeing on a baseline of facts when it comes to the challenges that confront us all."
That sounds more like a final push for his climate change agenda, as his speeches on that front have included similar language.

As Obama closed, he thanked the journalists for all of their hard work in standing in solidarity with him for America, or at least his progressive views on America. Their applause confirmed that they have enjoyed worshipping at his altar.

Here are the relevant passages from his speech:
"This is also a time around the world when some of the fundamental ideals of liberal democracies are under attack, and when notions of objectivity and of a free press and of facts and of evidence are trying to be undermined or in some cases, ignored entirely.

"And in such a climate, it's not enough just to give people a megaphone and that's why your power and your responsibility to dig and to question and to counter distortions and untruths is more important than ever.

"Taking a stand on behalf of what is true does not require you shedding your objectivity. In fact, it is the essence of good journalism. It affirms the idea that the only way we can build consensus, the only way we can move forward as a country, the only way we can help the world mend itself is by agreeing on a baseline of facts when it comes to the challenges that confront us all.

"So, this night is a testament to all of you who've devoted your lives to that idea. Who push to shine a light on the truth every single day. So, I want to close my final White House Correspondence Dinner by just saying, 'Thank you.' I'm very proud of what you've done. It has been an honor and a privilege to work side-by-side with you to strengthen our democracy."
The president left them with two final words: "Obama out." And then he literally dropped a mic for added effect. Seriously, he dropped the mic.
