As he prepares for his grandest, most expensive tour yet, Former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters is getting some costly pushback from major sponsors over his hateful, pro-Palestinian views on Israel.
According to Page Six, American Express passed on the opportunity to spend up to $4 million to sponsor Waters’ 2017 US + Them North American tour. A spokeswoman for AmEx said, “Roger is putting on a huge show. The company was asked to sponsor his tour for $4 million, but pulled out because it did not want to be part of his anti-Israel rhetoric.”
AmEx did work with Waters at this month’s “Oldchella,” the Desert Trip festival, where he performed along with such classic rockers as the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan and Neil Young.Desert Trip. But this time out, AmEx said “We never committed to sponsoring Roger Waters’ upcoming tour. When we were approached with the options, we passed on making a bid.” The rep added, “It is a balancing act to work with artists our card members love, within the budgets we have allocated.” Waters has since partnered with Citi.
Waters reportedly shocked the audience at Oldchella by unleashing a series of brutal images targeting Donald Trump, displaying such slogans as “F - - k Trump and his wall” and “Arrogant, lying, racist, sexist,” then voicing solidarity with students protesting for Palestinians. He also urged people to support the controversial BDS movement against Israel and added, “I encourage the government in Israel to end the occupation.”
Earlier this year Waters, who proudly states that “I have been accused of being a Nazi and an anti-Semite for the past 10 years," claims that his peers in the music biz "are scared sh*tless" to speak out against Israel. "If they say something in public, they will no longer have a career. They will be destroyed.”
Perhaps that's because audiences don't like musicians using their platform to promote anti-Semitic hate speech against our closest ally Israel.
