Saturday Night Live’s cold open this weekend came out swinging hard at MSNBC Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski as well as the author of Fire and Fury, Michael Wolff.
Right out of the gate, the opening music is a dig at Scarborough’s own song, Mystified, which he turned into an anti-Trump, anti-gun, and anti-talent music video. SNLparodies the song with the lyrics, “Welcome to the nut house,” just as Mika and Joe appear on screen. Kate McKinnon’s Mika Brzezinski was about as good as her Hillary Clinton. Nailed it.
One running gag is the flirtations between Scarborough and Brzezinksi which make commentator Willie Geist uncomfortable/grossed out. After they introduce their first guest, the MSNBC hosts continue to talk over him incessantly giving him no chance to answer any questions — just like in real life!
SNL alum Fred Armisen makes an appearance as disgraced author Michael Wolff, whose book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House has turned out to be an embarrassing collection of hearsay. Armisen’s Wolff is also spot-on and with the addition of a facial scar could easily become an indistinguishable Dr. Evil. His characterization isn’t far off the mark at all. The real Wolff once said on MSNBC that he doesn’t have to produce any evidence of his wild claims because all the proof is in the book: “My evidence is the book, read the book. If it makes sense to you, if it strikes a cord, if it rings true, it is true.”
In SNL’s version, Geist confronts Wolff and points out the errors in his book. Wolff responds, “Look, you’ve read it right?” To which the panel responds hesitantly. Wolff adds, “And you liked it, you had fun… you got the gist, so shut up! You know, even the stuff that’s not true, it’s true.”
Another alum makes a surprise visit — Bill Murray plays Steve Bannon and later, Oprah Winfrey, played by Leslie Jones, shows up to talk the presidency.
Every once in a while, SNL gets one right.
