He was recently moved from a prison in Florida and had a stop in Oklahoma City before arriving in West Virginia.Bureau of Prisons officials and Bulger’s attorney declined last week to comment on why he was being moved. A person familiar with his move told the Boston Globe said Bulger’s health was deteriorating.Bulger was convicted of racketeering, and other crimes, including extortion, conspiracy, money-laundering and drug dealing in August 2013. The jury believed he took part in 11 of 19 killings.
Bulger was an FBI informant in the 1970s, feeding information about the rival Italian mafia to the government in exchange for protection. He was eventually indicted and was on the run for several years before finally being arrested. Bulger was also a strong supporter of the leftist terrorist Irish Republican Army, financing their activities with proceeds from his criminal enterprise.
Robert Mueller, now Special Counsel, was in the Boston office during Bulger’s reign of terror and was accused of looking the other way on Bulger’s criminal behavior. The identity of the killer and the motive isn’t known yet. It could be that it was a simple altercation between prisoners, or it could be a hit ordered from the rival Italian Mafia.
