HBO’s Bill Maher is sure to be on the receiving end of an intense backlash after he blamed the fixation on political correctness for the Democratic party’s failure to win elections.
Normally a reliable cheerleader for Democrats, Maher has at times infuriated his political allies for going rogue and deviating from the party line by criticizing contradictions and daring to break existing taboos by pointing out their flaws.
He was in rare form on Friday’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” when he took on a topic that has become akin to a dogma with the political left and strongly suggested that leading liberals should denounce the more radical elements that have become intolerant to the point of quashing free speech through public shaming.
Maher’s comments support a new study showing that an astonishing 80 percent of Americans believe that political correctness has now become a major problem.
The comic used the example of former astronaut Scott Kelly (who is married to Gabby Giffords) being forced to apologize for quoting Winston Churchill, a towering historical figure whose iron resolve was critical in the battle to save the world from the horrors of Nazism.
CHECK IT OUT:
On Friday night, Bill Maher kicked off his panel discussion by tackling political correctness, something he believes is holding Democrats back.
Maher began by expressing that he doesn’t think people vote “not so much on policy anymore” but “who’s strong,” insisting they know President Donald Trump is “an idiot,” but he “looks strong.”
“80% of Americans see political correctness as a problem. And I think it’s our problem,” Maher told the panel. “And I don’t know why more mainstream liberals don’t denounce the political correctness that they must know in private conversations is insane.”
The Real Time host then invoked a recent example of political correctness running amuck of astronaut Scott Kelly issuing an apology for his praise of Winston Churchill.
“This is the guy who saved us from the Nazis!” Maher exclaimed. “And [Kelly] was a fighter pilot, married to Gabby Giffords, who was shot and bravely continues on. And people on Twitter- and no one denounces this! This is when the Trump people go, ‘Yes, you people are too fragile to be in control of the government.’”
That Maher’s panel threw such a fit only served to put an exclamation point on what he had expressed which makes it clear that the idea is so deeply entrenched that it’s not simply going to go away despite the diminishing returns at the ballot box and with public opinion.
Could it be that outside of the social media enabled bubble that the majority of Americans are sick and tired of this divisive non-debate? Many would agree that is the case.
It’s one thing to tear down monuments to the Confederacy but where does it end? When people are bullied into denouncing even Winston Churchill out of fear of being called mean things on Twitter it’s a sign that things have already gone way too far.
Maher himself may be forced to apologize but he is the proverbial canary in the coal mine and when a venerable establishment publication like The Atlantic points out that “Americans Strongly Dislike PC Culture” it speaks volumes.
