The impasse between the National Football League and Colin Kaepernick continues as the former San Francisco 49er quarterback turned activist remains a man without a team.
Kaepernick’s controversial decision to begin kneeling during the playing of the national anthem to protest perceived injustice against blacks exploded onto the national scene during the acrimonious 2016 election year and soon spawned a movement.
It wasn’t long before dozens of other players were mimicking Kaepernick with Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL powerless to stop the sideline displays that have since alienated millions of fans and adversely affected the league’s television ratings.
Ever since he opted out of his multimillionaire contract with the 49ers, Kaepernick has found it tough going to get another NFL job even though he has become an iconic figure who has piled up awards as well as being the focus of athletic apparel giant Nike’s new advertising campaign.
But his return to the game could be coming and all that it has taken is one mega-stinker of a performance by the two-time Super Bowl winning Eli Manning to have many clamoring for Kaepernick to be signed immediately to replace the aging signal caller with the New York Giants.
The Giants dropped to 1-5 after an ugly Thursday night loss to the hated Philadelphia Eagles in which the 38-year old Manning once again struggled and mercurial wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. who just signed a whopping $95 million contract ($65 million guaranteed) continued his pattern of petulant behavior by leaving the field before halftime out of frustration.
ESPN’s Max Kellerman made an emotional appeal for the men in blue to turn the page on Manning and usher in what some feel will be a new era of football dominance that could be ignited by the “dynamic” Kaepernick.

It’s not only Kellerman calling for a change either:
Just admit it.The Giants need Colin Kaepernick https://t.co/wM4U0FiWhE— NY Daily News Sports (@NYDNSports) October 12, 2018

Do you think the Giants should sign Colin Kaepernick if Eli Manning continues to struggle?— NY Daily News Sports (@NYDNSports) October 11, 2018
New York Daily News sportswriter Chuck Modiano made his case for the Giants to ink Kaepernick to a deal BEFORE Thursday night’s stinker in his column “The Giants should sign Colin Kaepernick right now”:
If the Giants owners want to continue keep Kap out of the league, and if some fans don’t want Kap signed for his racial justice protest, that’s on them. If other fans want to continue an Eli Manning Sentimentality tour, that’s on them, too.But this author is old enough to remember when Patrick Ewing was traded by the Knicks, and the backpage headline that read “GOOD RIDDANCE.” Though not as harsh, Joe Namath had an ugly end, too, and Don Mattingly was pushed out the door on the cusp of his postseason dreams.New York has always been a tough town – except for Eli Manning, I guess. After getting benched for Geno Smith last year, Eli’s watery locker room eyes seemed to produce more sympathy and visceral outrage than for Christine Blasey Ford. The Giants coach was fired. Eli got his job back, and Brett Kavanaugh became a Supreme Court Justice.
For the time being, the team is mum on Kaepernick and still backing their longtime star quarterback:

There is however no denying that Manning’s skills have deteriorated almost as quickly as those of his more famous brother Peyton who was a shadow of his former self during his last year with the Denver Broncos.
Peyton went out as a Super Bowl winner but had a stacked defense and a unified locker room without distractions like Beckham, it’s not going to be that happy of an ending for Eli.
Will the Giants bow to mounting pressure and bring in Kaepernick who would likely be a vast improvement over Manning? Some may suggest that such a move could backfire by adding another outsized personality to the team along with the weekly media circus and then there are the fans.
Prior to last season, Giants owner John Mara cited a fear of a fan revolt as the main reason why the team had no interest in signing Kap because of an overwhelmingly negative response to speculation that it would consider it.
One thing is for certain and that’s the longer the losing goes on, the louder the calls for Kaepernick will become.
