GoFundMe defunds Canadians protesting vax mandate
OTTAWA, Ontario (ChurchMilitant.com) - GoFundMe is blocking Canadian truckers from accessing over 6.2 million Canadian dollars raised in support of their vaccine-mandate protest at Canada's capital, Ottawa.
A spokeswoman for GoFundMe, Rachel Hollis, on Monday related, "We require that fundraisers be transparent about the flow of funds and have a clear plan for how those funds will be spent. In this case, we are in touch with the organizer to verify that information."
The truckers' fundraising page, titled "Freedom Convoy 2022," states, "Our current government is implementing rules and mandates that are destroying the foundation of our businesses, industries and livelihoods."
GoFundMe accepted donations from more than 80,000 donors, but where the money will ultimately go is now unclear.
Hollis claimed, "Funds will be safely held until the organizer is able to provide the documentation to our team about how funds will be properly distributed."
Tamara Lich, secretary of the Maverick Party (a Western separatist organization), launched the crowdfunding campaign on Jan. 14. The fundraiser page explains the money raised will go towards gas costs, food and lodging for the truckers' protesting.
In the campaign description, Lich affirms, "We are a peaceful country that has helped protect nations across the globe from tyrannical governments who oppressed their people, and now it seems it is happening here."
Lich didn't seem surprised by GoFundMe's actions, saying, "When they're scared, the first thing they're going to try to do is come after your money. And when that doesn't work, they're going to try and shut us down."
Over 50,000 trucks are taking part in the convoy, which has been active for nearly two weeks. The trucks have driven from western Canada and will gather this weekend in the nation's capital of Ottawa to protest COVID-19 measures such as vaccine mandates, vaccine passports and lockdown restrictions.
The Canadian government is requiring all truckers entering the country from the United States to be vaccinated (or else they will be subjected to a two-week quarantine).
Labor minister Seamus O'Regan also announced plans to establish a vaccine mandate for all workers in federally regulated industries.
The Canadian Trucking Alliance, which has condemned the convoy protest, claims that more than 85% of the 120,000 Canadian truck drivers who cross the border on a regular basis are vaccinated. Nearly 16,000 truck drivers may be affected by the new restriction, which will exacerbate supply chain problems.
"The Canadian Trucking Alliance does not support, and strongly disapproves of, any protests on public roadways, highways and bridges," the alliance stated.

A multitude of Canadian members of Parliament have expressed support for the truckers' protest. Alberta premier Jason Kenney tweeted out images of bare grocery store shelves and related he was "on the phone with U.S. governors" that morning, working to fix the problem. Kenney notes he intends to send a dual letter to U.S. president Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in hopes of ending the mandates.
Members of Parliament Andrew Scheer and Warren Steinley greeted the convoy in support as it passed through Regina on Monday.
Conservative party leader Erin O'Toole warned, "We're going to see prices skyrocket for groceries, for everything," and added Canada's liberal COVID policies will lead to "division and pink slips."
