Democrats think they have a way to force Republicans to stop draining their beloved fraudulent and corrupt swamp. Ranking minority Senator Chuck Schumer has a scheme to stand in the way of Donald Trump. Shut down the government and blame it on the president. He spelled the plan out to the blue team in a letter on February 10.
Democrats call for shutdown
Democrats think the threat of shutting down government is the leverage they need to move Republicans out of their way. They don’t seem to realize that would only make the job of cutting fraud and waste that much easier.
Go ahead. Shut the whole thing down. It’s doing more harm than good every day it stays in business, conservatives counter. They can’t get sued to stop it if liberals do it.
On Monday, February 10, Chuck Schumer sent a letter around to fellow Senate Democrats. Calling his plan a “Trump shutdown,” he reminded his colleagues that they “have the power to make or break any bill to fund the government past March 14.”
The left sees the “looming funding deadline as an important point of leverage.”
Democrats are frantic to find a way to “slow or stop President Trump’s and Elon Musk’s freezing of federal payments, lockout of federal workers and plans to slash government spending by trillions of dollars.”
They can’t get rich off selling the perks and privileges of pork-barrel democracy that way.
All Trump’s fault
The important thing, Schumer emphasizes, is to blame their actions on Trump. Democrats need to make clear that they “want to avoid a shutdown” while withholding their votes for the Republican spending package. That way, when “Congress fails to reach a government funding deal by the March 14 deadline, the fault would lie with Trump.”
Schumer is afraid that there might be 10 “centrist” DINOs lurking in his ranks who could cave in to pressure from voters in their swing state districts.
“Legislation in the Senate requires 60 votes and Senate Democrats will use our votes to help steady the ship for the American people in these turbulent times,” Schumer insists. He’s counting on RINOs but they’re scarce.
He really misses the ones who’ve been put out to pasture, like Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney. “It is incumbent on responsible Republicans to get serious and work in a bipartisan fashion to avoid a Trump Shutdown.”
Senator Andy Kim is fully behind Schumer’s scheme. He “would be willing to shut the government down if that’s what it takes to put a stop to stop Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency.” He “cannot support efforts that will continue” the elimination of government fraud and abuse.
Ending corruption and mismanagement “is not something that should be allowed.” Democrats may be surprised when they get what they wished for. Shutting down the government could result in President Trump declaring a general state of emergency.
