Mike Rowe took some time out on Saturday to demolish a hit piece directed at him and to school a liberal journalist in the ways of "Rhetoric and Persuasion."
Rowe, reality TV star of Dirty Jobs and now Somebody's Gotta Do It on CNN, addressed a faux controversy that columnist Tom Boggioni generated in his piece atRaw Story.
Boggioni ran with this headline: "TV’s Mike Rowe trashes Ohio girl’s ‘character’ after she’s stripped of first place in state contest."
Here's a little background: the Ohio girl Shania Clifford was mistakenly awarded a gold medal via a clerical error in a masonry contest held by SkillsUSA, an organization Rowe is affiliated with but doesn't run and has no input in competitions. Clifford actually came in third but was allowed to keep the medal. However, only the real first place winner got to advance to the national competition, leaving Clifford dismayed.
Rowe received pushback on his Facebook page, getting called every name in the 8th grade handbook: "douchebag," "asshole," and the like. But instead of responding to the mindless name-calling, Rowe decided to target the journalist who put him in this position.
So, he takes the bloated piece and takes it a part, nearly line-by-line, and turns "The Raw Story" into "The Real Story." It's a fantastic takedown and a pertinent commentary on the state of an overly sensationalized media (click on "See More" in the FB post below):
It worked, too. Raw Story added an editors note that declared a change to misinformation about Rowe's association with SkillsUSA included in a previous version of the story. More subtly, the headline was changed to read: "TV’s Mike Rowe questions teen’s decision to keep medal after contest controversy."
