The Hollywood Reporter (THR) announced yesterday that Dinesh D'Souza's documentary Hillary's America is officially the top-grossing documentary of the year, having amassed $5.2 million in its first dozen days.
As THR pointed out, that's the best showing of any documentary since the documentary Amy, about the late singer Amy Winehouse, earned $8.2 million following its release on July 3, 2015.
Among 2016 docs, Hillary's America easily outstripped the $3.8 million grossed by Michael Moore's Where to Invade Next. Among political documentaries, D'Souza's film, produced by Hollywood conservative Gerald Molen, already ranks No. 10.
Timed to open with the Republican National Convention, Hillary's America took in $77,500 from five theaters in Texas for a spectacular theater average of $25,833. Last weekend the film expanded nationwide into 1,217 theaters, grossing $4 million to put it at number ten.
D'Souza's 2012 film, 2016: Obama's America, was a huge hit, earning $33.4 million and becoming the No. 2 political documentary of all time in the U.S. behind Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004). In fact, Obama's America ranks No. 4 among all documentaries.
D'Souza's follow-up film America, released in June 2014, earned $14.4 million in the U.S.
